The Long Lost Yankees Mascot

Apr. 16, 2010 - Bronx, United States - epa02120470 Fans stand in the rain during a weather delay of the game between the Texas Rangers and the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York, USA, 16 April 2010.

Time for an interesting Yankees fact before the second and final Subway Series of 2010.

Very interesting information I found on “Big League Stew” a Yahoo sports blog, and also tweeted by George Steinbrenner on twitter, conveniently before Part 2 of the Subway Series. The Yankees did have a mascot! Blasphemy! Check out the Video.

How many of you know Yankees Fans? I know quite a few and Yankees fans will all state that the Yankees don’t need a mascot. That’s beneath them.

Well now we know the true story.

“Big League Stew” unearths the details about this freakish looking mascot and cites the Wall Street Journal for information about “DANDY” who was the Yankee Mascot from 1979 to 1981.

Turns out that due to the popularity of the Philly Phanatic the Yankees did make an attempt to have a mascot. The Yankees mascot, Dandy, had a mustache much like that of Thurman Munson, the Captain of the Yankees at the time. He was big, royal blue and a huge disaster!

Timing was incredibly bad for the Yankees mascot as he was introduced only a few weeks before Thurmon Munson died in a plane crash. After Munson’s death, Dandy was relegated to the upper deck of Yankee Stadium for the 3 years he was in existence. Then he just disappeared.

On the other hand, our own lovable Mascot, Mr. Met, couldn’t be more popular. The kids love him and most everyone recognizes Mr. Mets unique baseball number,  “00“. I would love to see Mr. Met at Yankee Stadium just to rub in the Mascot Envy.

So for everyone out there who will be watching the Subway Series with friends who also happen to be Yankee fans, rub it in. It’s all in good fun!
