On Deck: June 6- Mets At Padres- Game 2

New York Mets (30-29) at San Diego Padres (25-37) 10:05pm

Johan Santana (7-3 3.20) vs. Randy Wolf (3-4 4.33)

TV: SNY Radio: WFAN

What to watch: Santana looks like he’s really starting to sharpen up his game. Unfortunately, the Mets are in a position now where they have to win three games in a row to take the series from the Padres. It’s hard to believe that the Padres have become Brian Giles, Trevor Hoffman, Adrian Gonzalez, and a bunch of Triple-A players. I feel sorry for their fans having to watch that team every day.

Mets Lose To Padres In Ninth 2-1

I’ll cut right to the chase. Scott Schoenweiss blew up in the bottom of the ninth. And I was getting worried that Aaron Heilman was warming up in the bullpen. Little did I know…

Schoenweiss walked two, then an intentional walk, and then hit Paul McAnulty with a pitch to bring home the winning run. What a horrible way to lose a game.

Jose Reyes made a couple of really nice plays in the field. He also went 2 for 3 with two stolen bases.

Mike Pelfrey was pitching out of trouble in most of his six innings. He gave up eight hits and three walks while only giving up one run. His line looks better than he actually pitched.

The Mets only run came in the sixth inning when Jose Reyes singled, stole second base, then scored on a single by David Wright.

Terrible loss. The Mets go to 2-2 on the road trip and one game over .500.

What jumps out at me is that Randolph seems to be much more open to pointing out when players are going badly than he was before the meeting with the Wilpons. I like that he isn’t being an apologist for every player that’s going badly.

Mets First Round Draft Picks: Davis And Havens

New York Mets

The Mets used their two first round picks today on 1B/OF Ike Davis from Arizona State Univ. and Reese Havens, a SS from Univ. of Georgia.

Check out Ben Shipgel’s column at the New York Times for more information.

I don’t get too excited about these guys because most never make the big league team. And the ones that do, typically take a few years to get there. Not much to get crazy about. I’m more concerned about this season.
