What to watch: This is why Santana gets the big bucks, to stop the bleeding. Coming off a short series sweep in Chicago, the Mets may find that playing the Nationals is the cure. They’re just a bad team, maybe the worst in baseball. They’re certainly a team that the Mets can beat up on and get “right” before heading home to face the Braves.
Alou Could Be Back Friday
David Lennon of Newsday reports that Moises Alou could re-join the team as early as Friday.

What a shot in the arm for the team that would be. They need a right handed hitter in the middle of the lineup badly. Hopefully, Willie will move Delgado down when Alou gets back. Ideally, it would be Alou, Church, Delgado, and Castillo at the 5, 6, 7, 8 spots in the order.
Oh, and by the way Brady Clark will be on waivers for the purpose of reassignment I would have to assume.
Delgado Is Dead Weight And I’m Mad!

Question: How do you get rid of $16 million worth of dead weight?
Answer: I have no idea.
I’m exasperated watching Carlos Delgado. He’s completely lost it. If he had any respect for himself he would return most of the money the Mets have paid him last season and so far this season and retire. He’s hurting the team. That’s what it comes down to.
The problem for the Mets is that there’s no solution to this problem. There isn’t another player on the team or in the minors that can play first base every day. I know about Mike Carp. He’s not going to play every day for this team. So, forget it.
There’s no way to get rid of Delgado without releasing him and paying him. It’s been done before. Damion Easley got released by the Tigers and they owed him $14 million. So that’s a possibility.
Delgado can’t be traded… Nobody would take him. I can’t even blame Omar Minaya for bringing him here. I went back and looked at his numbers. His last year with the Marlins was excellent. He was a .300 hitter. Since the 2006 season his skills seem to have just dropped off a cliff. He’s barely a .200 hitter now.
It’s also really bothering me that Willie won’t move him down from fifth in the lineup out of respect for Delgado. Forget respect, Willie! We’re trying to win games here. Delgado should be hitting sixth or seventh. Based on his performance, there’s no denying that.

Cedeno Grand Slams Mets 8-1
Update: I watched the game on the SNY re-broadcast and I’m sorry that I did. That was pathetic. Figueroa was just okay, he wasn’t terrible. The bullpen, however, was terrible. Jorge Sosa is pitching to an almost 8 ERA right now. That just doesn’t get it done! I know he signed a $2 million contract for this year but the Mets may have to release him. He’s that bad.
Carlos Delgado is another story. This was one of the worst overall games that I’ve seen from him. He looked lost in the field and he’s been lost in the batters box for more than a year now. More to come in another post on that.
Willie better get this ship righted quickly or there’ll be more calls for his head than there already are. He’s abused the bullpen and paid way too much respect to the veteran players in the lineup. After the way last season ended, there won’t be much tolerance for bad decision making by him.
I was at work today and only got to hear parts of the game. I’m going to watch the depressing re-broadcast on SNY tonight. I’ll post a more detailed review after I get to watch the horror unfold on Jorge Sosa. For now, here’s the box score.

What to watch: The Mets really need to take this game. Even though it’s a short two game series they don’t want to get swept in Chicago. Getting out of town with a split would be just fine. Figueroa has looked pretty good for a guy off the street and out of U.S. baseball recently. Ted Lilly has been awful this season. Hopefully, that’s a recipe for a Mets win.
