Fox Sports Ken Rosenthal previews this weekend’s Mets-Cubs series at Wrigley. It’s funny that they introduce that piece as a preview of the “great” match-up’s on Fox this weekend. I’d hardly call this series “great”. I think that I’d use the adjective “weak”. Both teams are in the tank and the Mets already threw in the towel for this season. The rumors are that the Cubs have too by putting Rich Harden on waivers with word that he was claimed by the Twins.

Pedro Martinez (1-0 4.50) vs. Oliver Perez (3-3 6.06)

TV: WPIX

What to watch: Pedro returns! It’s kind of sad to see a formerly-great pitcher hanging onto his career by a thread, but Pedro is back. You can bet that he’ll be highly motivated today against the downtrodden Mets. The Mets are 5-3 in the games that Perez has started since he came off the DL. He wasn’t great in his last start against the Braves giving up 4 earned runs in 5 innings but he hasn’t lost a decision since July 21.

J.A. Happ (9-2 2.66) vs. Tim Redding (1-4 6.53)

TV: SNY

What to watch: Redding is making his first start back in the rotation since the Mets released Livan Hernandez. Redding was the obvious choice for the rotation because he’s been rocked in his last two relief outings, giving up 6 earned runs over 4 innings. On the other hand, Happ has been outstanding this year. He hasn’t allowed more than 2 runs in his last four starts including a complete game shutout of the Rockies on Aug. 5.

Derek Lowe (12-7 4.08) vs. Oliver Perez (2-3 5.97)

TV: SNY

What to watch: The Braves come to town hot, winning seven of their last nine games. Lowe has won his last five decisions and hasn’t lost a game since July 5. You already know about the Mets struggles but Perez has pitched well lately only allowing 2 earned runs over 11.2 innings in his last two starts. This will be Ryan Church‘s first game back at Citi Field since being traded to the Braves. I expect him to get a good welcome back from the crowd and everyone on the team, except for maybe Jerry Manuel.

Joe Martinez (2-1 6.00) vs. Livan Hernandez (7-7 5.28)

TV: SNY

What to watch: The Giants are trying to split the four game series with a win today. Martinez got hit pretty hard in a 9-1 loss to the Dodgers in his last start giving up 3 earned runs in 4.1 innings. Hernandez is hanging onto his spot in the rotation by a string. His last two starts have been exceedingly bad giving up 12 earned runs in 9 innings. Another bad start today and he can kiss his job goodbye.

Jonathan Sanchez (5-10 4.61) vs. Mike Pelfrey (8-8 4.88)

TV: SNY

What to watch: The Mets and Giants play the third game of their series today. I don’t think that the beanball war will continue into today’s game. Sanchez’ season has really been up and down. He’s 2-2 since pitching a no-hitter on July 10. Pelfrey is 0-2 in his last two starts and the Mets have lost four of the last five games that he started.

Matt Cain (12-4 2.44) vs. Johan Santana (13-8 3.00)

TV: FOX

What to watch: Cain’s been having an unbelievable season but his last two starts have been sub-par. The Giants lost both games and he gave up 9 runs in 15 innings. Santana’s last start against the Padres was fantastic going 8 innings and only giving up 1 run. This is a terrific pitching matchup for those lucky enough to be going to the game. Expect Billy Wagner to start making his way to New York today with the intent of rejoining the team as early as tomorrow.
