Carlos Beltran and His 32 Game On Base Streak are Gone!

DENVER, CO - MAY 12: Carlos Beltran #15 of th...

For all the complaints I have made about Carlos Beltran in the past… how selfish I think he was, how he never stood up to be a leader in the clubhouse or on the field, how he didn’t show up to a Veteran’s Hospital visit, how he ended the 2006 NL Championship with his bat on his shoulder and even his preference to play for the Yankees for a discount before he settled on the Mets… his bat and glove will be missed.

Let me make that clear… His bat and glove will be missed. The player will not be.

He has had a productive career here but he was (and still is) clearly playing for his next contract and a chance to win now. Who can blame him? He currently has a 32 game on base streak that dates back to June 16th. It’s the second longest active streak in the majors. He’s leading the NL in doubles with 30 and he’s seventh in the NL with 66 RBI’s. He’s http://laparkan.com/buy-sildenafil/ also tied for 2nd with 47 extra base hits.

Basically, Beltran was having a monster season and showing everyone he was finally healthy, proved he could still play the field and was still dangerous on the base-paths. This was a 4 month audition for his next team. Nothing more so I had no emotional attachments to Beltran this year. I’m not glad he’s gone, don’t really care he’s gone either.

I am glad he went to the Giants though. I can now root for the Giants. Beltran’s going to have a monster 2 months and he still has the capability of carrying that team all the way to the World Series. I would love to see Beltran help the Giants beat the Phillies and the Yankees at some point. The trade is bittersweet but had to be done. We did get a great pitching prospect in return and the future looks a little brighter for it.

So I will say Goodbye Carlos Beltran. I’ll enjoy watching you hit homers out into the San Francisco Bay.

The Mets lost the game and lose two of three in the series in San Francisco before the All-Star break. Mike Pelfrey had a solid start going 6 innings and allowing 2 runs. But he couldn’t match Matt Cain who threw 6 shutout innings. Jon Niese, in his first relief appearance, and D.J. Carrasco let the game get away in the seventh inning by allowing 2 more runs.

On offense, the Mets had 9 hits and 3 walks so they had some opportunities to score but couldn’t capitalize. They left 10 runners on base and Daniel Murphy left 3 runners in scoring position with 2 outs.

The Mets come back to New York for the break at one game over .500.

New York Mets (46-44) at San Francisco Giants (51-40) 8:05pm

Mike Pelfrey (5-7 4.64) vs. Matt Cain (7-5 3.22)

TV: ESPN             Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets and Giants play the rubber game of the series before the All-Star break on national TV tonight. Pelfrey has lost two of his last three starts but his last start in LA was solid throwing 6 shutout innings for a win. He’s started 5 games in his career against the Giants and has a 2-1 record with a 2.04 ERA.

The Giants have lost three of the last four games that Cain started. But he always seems to suffer from a lack of run support.  In his career at home (98 starts), he’s 37-32 with a 3.15 ERA.

Join me and Kerel Cooper of On The Black at 7pm tonight for a live streaming pre-game show on Ustream.

Giants 3 – Mets 1 July 9, 2011

Tim Lincecum

The Mets couldn’t overcome a solid game from Tim Lincecum who went 6 innings and only allowed 1 run. Chris Capuano stayed close to him and pitched well enough to win on most nights but going against Lincecum is a different story. Capuano also went 6 innings and allowed only 2 runs. Bobby Parnell pitched the seventh inning and allowed another run to the Giants on 2 hits.

The Mets had no offense going at all in this game. They only had 4 hits and 5 walks as a team. The only run they scored was on a pair of doubles in the first inning by Carlos Beltran and Daniel Murphy. That was the offense for the game.

The Mets and Giants will play the rubber game of the series on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball.

The Mets got another solid start from R.A. Dickey and came up with a big ninth inning win in San Francisco. Dickey went 7 innings and allowed only 2 runs on 7 hits and no walks. Both runs were given up to Nate Schierhotlz on a sac fly in the fourth inning and a solo homer in the sixth inning. The homer was into McCovey Cove too.

The Mets scored in the fifth inning on an Angel Pagan 2-run homer. Carlos Beltran and Daniel Murphy both had 3 hits in the game. The game was tied 2-2 going into the ninth. Scott Hairston led off the inning with a solo homer off Brian Wilson in dramatic fashion. The Mets went on to put up three more hits in the inning off three Giants relievers. It was a big late inning win for the Mets.

New York Mets (45-43) at San Francisco Giants (50-39) 10:15pm

R.A. Dickey (4-7 3.68) vs. Ryan Vogelsong (6-1 2.13)

TV: SNY             Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Giants just split a four game series at home with the Padres and have a 2 game lead in the NL West over the D-Backs. Vogelsong has been kicking around the league for the last 10 years but he’s been pitching pretty well this season. The Mets hit him hard on May 3rd at Citi Field for 5 runs in 4 innings. But that was the last time he allowed more than 3 runs in a start.

Dickey has been pitching well too. Although he left his last start against the Yankees after 5 innings with tightness in his glute. The Mets have won the last three games that Dickey started.
