Mets Remove Local Papers From Locker Room

This one is interesting. The NY Post reports that the Mets have removed the NY Post and the Daily News from their locker room. The implication is that the Mets don’t want to see what’s written about them. The only paper that’s allowed now is the USA Today. Mets PR man Jay Horwitz tells reporters that it’s because the USA Today is the official paper of MLB. Yeah, right Jay.

I didn’t realize that anybody still read actual newspapers. Apparently, the Mets were the last people to still do that.

The Mets and Phillies have been rained out today in Philadelphia. A make up date hasn’t been announced yet. The next time the Mets are at Citizen’s Bank Park is the July 4th weekend. That would be a great time for a double header, even if it is a dual-entry double header. I’d be shocked if they didn’t schedule it for that weekend.

Mets 2009 Ticket Sales- June To October Games

Citi FieldOn Sunday May 3rd the Mets put their single game tickets for the rest of the season on sale. As we know, they’ve been playing games this year with their single game tickets hoping that the gimmicks will increase interest.

Florida Marlins To File Complaint Against Mets

The Marlins plan to file a complaint with Major League Baseball about the Mets stalling tactics during the April 29,2009 game at Citi Field. With two outs in the ninth and the bases loaded, Mets manager Jerry Manuel called for a pinch hitter for catcher Ramon Castro. It was a curious move considering that Castro already had two hits in the game. More curious, was that it took about five minutes to get the hitter into the game. Omir Santos was in the bullpen and later admitted that he went into the batting cage under the stadium to get some warm up swings in before the at-bat.

The Marlins even called the stalling tactic Bush League. And I have to admit that I agree. The complaint will center around MLB’s pace of game rules. Although I doubt there will be a fine or suspension, Manuel should be warned about using such tactics again. It’s not in the spirit of the rules of the game.

Darren O’Day has had an interesting week. He was waived by the Mets on Sunday to make room for Nelson Figueroa on the roster. O’Day was then claimed by the Texas Rangers from waivers and had to report to Toronto for the Rangers series with the Blue Jays.

According to MLB.com, O’Day appeared in his firt game wearing the unirform of Kason Gabbard. Apparently, he was home in Florida when he got the call from his agent that he was claimed off waivers. He flew to Toronto to meet up with the team and was told to go directly from the airport to the Rogers Centre where the Rangers were in the middle of a game. Then, he actually got into the game. But because this happened so fast the Rangers didn’t have a uniform ready for him.

Mets News Top Stories- April 8, 2009

The Mets endured one of the dreaded road days off yesterday in Cincinnati. If you’ve ever been there you know that its not one of the most exciting cities in the United States. The reports were that the most entertaining thing that the Mets could find to do yesterday was go to the movies. Apparently, the city is so boring that they decided to do a double feature and kill the whole day at the movies. If that’s not an indictment of a boring city, I don’t know what is. The Mets chance to enjoy the entertaining city of Cincinnati comes to an end today when they go back to work against the Reds.

Onto today’s top stories:

The Sporting News is reporting that Bronson Arroyo will start for the Reds against the Mets tomorrow. He’s been suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome but he had a cortisone shot and is feeling good enough to pitch. Micah Owings was going to take his place in the Reds rotation.

Ben Shipgel of The New York Times recounts the whole Ryan Church concussion saga from last season. He talks about how the Gary Sheffield signing will impact Church’s playing time.  Shipgel says he can’t understand why the Mets are pushing Church so hard this season. It’s simple… They expect more from him than what they’re getting. The Mets think Church is capable of doing more than he’s shown.

Joel Sherman of the NY Post talks about the Mets bullpen and how Daniel Murphy and Ryan Church both played well on Monday. The Sheffield signing could push both of them to step up their games or lose playing time.

Saturday’s game against the Marlins won’t be televised for the first hour of the game. It’s scheduled to start at 6:10 pm because there’s a concert by rap star Flo Rida after the game. SNY is scheduled to broadcast the game but Fox has exclusive rights on Saturday’s until 7:05 pm.

Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated writes another column about how Mike Pelfrey and other young pitchers are at risk of injury or regression in performance because of their increased innings pitched at a young age. At this point, Verducci is pretty much making a living off of this theory of his that most major league teams don’t subscribe to. I’m not saying that Verducci is wrong about this. But he needs to find another topic to write about. He’s beating a dead horse now. We all know about his grand theory about young pitchers. Move on now Tom.
