Civil Rights Game- Mets and White Sox March 29

Ben Shipgel of the NY Times wrote an excellent column about the meaning of the Civil Rights Game next Saturday to Willie Randolph. This is an important game for every minority in the game not just African-Americans. The Mets have even adopted aspects of Jackie Robinson’s legacy as a National League player from New York. We know how important Robinson’s historical career is to Fred Wilpon.

I’ve read some articles questioning the choice of the Mets for the game based on the racial makeup of the roster. Although there are few African-Americans on the Mets roster, and Major League Baseball in general I disagree with the view that African-Americans are the only players impacted by the social change that occurred when Jackie Robinson began playing for the Dodgers in 1947. The door was opened for Latin, Japanese, and Korean players that play throughout the league now.

It was a smart choice by MLB to have two big market teams in the game to draw maximum attention to an exhibition game that’s more than just an exhibition.

Mets-Phillies Ascending Rivalry

Fox Sports Dayn Perry wrote a piece about the four best rivalries in baseball today. There wasn’t anything surprising about the rivalries selected in the column that you can read here. Though I found it bizarre that Perry would use this column to trash fans of the Red Sox, Yanks, Cubs, Mets, and Phillies. He also goes on to say that Midwesterners are better human beings than people from the East Coast.

I think it’s time to stop reading Perry’s columns. He can’t hold a candle to Ken Rosenthal…

Paul LoDuca Sounds Off, Again

David Lennon of Newsday reports that Paul LoDuca is unhappy with his treatment by the Mets… after his contract ended!

When told that the Mets suggested that they couldn’t accommodate his demands for a three-year deal, Lo Duca flashed some temper.

“Are you kidding me with that?” Lo Duca said. “Seriously. There was never a phone call. The man [Omar Minaya] called my agent and said he was interested in me after they had signed [Yorvit] Torrealba. They had signed Torrealba an hour before that. I don’t want to throw stones and I don’t want to get mixed up in any of this stuff, but it’s ridiculous. That’s the bottom line.”

I am so glad that he’s not around this year for a variety of reasons. His off-field behavior was questionable at best.  The story of his teenage girlfriend that went public was a distraction.

Frankly, his play on the field wasn’t that great. His mouth was bigger than his bat. Last season he hit .272 with 9 HR and 54 RBI.  The Mets won’t miss him at all. How can a player that’s not even under contract anymore be upset about how he’s being treated? Stop you’re whining Paul, and enjoy your one year deal with the Nats.

Breaking News: AP Reports Mets Likely Host 2013 All-Star Game

This is what we’ve been waiting for! I’m not a huge fan of All-Star games in general. Although baseball is easily the best all-star game in professional sports. Having an event like this at Citi Field is really exciting. I’d be thrilled to get a ticket for that one.

“We were informed by the commissioner that after moving into City Field, we would have an All-Star game but no date has been set,” Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz said Thursday following similar comments by chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon to ESPN.com.

The current hosting order is: Yankees, Cardinals, Angels, Arizona, and Kansas City. Read the entire story here.

The Mets Report Site Design

I’ve been tinkering with the design of this site for the last month or so. I’ve found some designs from WordPress that I liked, but not quite that much. I finally came across this great design from Chris Pearson at Pearsonified. The guy writes an interesting blog and has some great WordPress themes like the one that I’m using on this site. Check out his site.

What makes this site really stand out are the incredible photos from Ben Cooper at Launch Photography

Ben’s a good guy and a really talented photographer, as you can see from his great photos of Shea here. Check out his site for some awesome NASA launch photos and beautiful ballpark panoramas. You can purchase the photos on his site. If you enjoy seeing Ben’s photos here as much as I do, support his work by going to his site and making a purchase.

What could be more appropriate for the last season that the Mets will play at Shea than having rotating panoramic photos of the stadium?
