Randolph Stays

Omar Minaya and Willie Randolph addressed the media this afternoon and Willie Ranolph is staying. Basically, they said that the Wilpons wanted to speak to Willie face to face about the comments that he made last weekend to Ian O’Connor. And they wanted to discuss what’s wrong with the Mets and how to get things turned around.

If I was in the Wilpons shoes, I probably would have made a change. I think that there are viable candidates out there to replace Randolph as the New York Mets manager.

I would surmise that they spoke about particular player performances and what to do about several players that have been major disappointments.

Well, there you go. That’s what we’ve been waiting all week for. Nothing has changed. If you thought the booing was bad earlier this season, hold onto your hat tonight. I expect that the Mets are really going to hear it.

Report: Randolph Will Not Be Fired

New York Mets manager Willie Randolph is coming home from Colorado to a well publicized meeting with the Wilpons tomorrow. Sports Illustrated baseball writer Jon Heyman is reporting tonight that Randolph won’t be fired at this meeting.

The report doesn’t seem to offer any factual evidence such as a quote from a team employee. It’s more conjecture based on the Wilpons’ past behavior to predict future behavior.

Basically, the column states that Willie will probably be given a very short amount of time, as little as a week, to display a change in the team. He may be given just the homestand against the Marlins and Dodgers to prove that the Mets are on the right track.

I’m not so sure that the Wilpons won’t make a change tomorrow.

Minaya In Denver

Adam Rubin of the Daily News is reporting that Omar Minaya is making an unscheduled trip to Denver for the Rockies series this weekend. Willie Randolph can’t be happy about that. Minaya wouldn’t do that unless it was an emergency situation, which it is.

I’d be shocked if they fired Randolph while the team is on the road. So Minaya must be there to gauge what’s going on in the locker room. He’ll probably have to file a report with the Wilpons on Monday, when they’re back in town, on the state of the team.

Francesa: Hernandez Would Manage Mets

There’s been a lot of speculation about Willie Randolph being fired. That speculation has changed since the series in Atlanta to who will be the next manager of the New York Mets and when it will happen.

I’m listening to WFAN’s Mike and the Mad Dog today. They’re talking about the managerial candidates for the Mets. Surprisingly, Mike Francesa says that he spoke to Keith Hernandez at Yankee Stadium last weekend. Mike asked Keith if he was offered the Mets job if he would take it, and Keith said “yes”.

The reason that I’m surprised is that I didn’t think that Keith would want the job. I thought that he enjoyed broadcasting for SNY without having to do every single game.

If Hernandez is interested in the job, that’s the right call. Obviously, he’s a Mets legend which doesn’t always translate into being a good manager. But in this case, I think it would be the correct direction to go. I’d miss seeing Keith do the games on SNY but he’s got a good head on his shoulders and a solid understanding of the game. Specifically, he understands what’s going on with this team.

One of the big reasons that Randolph is still the manager is because there haven’t been any clear cut candidates to replace him. But this revelation about Hernandez changes that. Now is the time for the Wilpons to make a move.
