Pedro Martinez Isn’t Close To Returning

I’ve been scouring the Internet today looking for an update on Pedro Martinez’ injury status. This is his sixth week on the disabled list since straining his hamstring in his first start of the season.

Finally, this evening MLB.com posted an update on what Martinez is doing. He’s still throwing side sessions from a bullpen mound in Port St. Lucie. He hasn’t faced live hitters yet but expects to as early as this week.

He’ll need to throw a simulated game or an extended spring training game first. Then he’ll need to make some rehab starts in minor league games. It could be a while before he’s back.

A month ago Pedro was making noise to Dominican newspapers about how he’s going to surprise everyone and be back in New York before the end of April. It’ll be interesting to see what the Mets do with the rotation when he gets back. Mike Pelfrey or Nelson Figueroa will be out. Pelfrey could go to New Orleans and work on his control. I’d prefer to see Figueroa stay in the rotation but he’s probably better suited to come out of the bullpen than Pelfrey.

Mets Getting Healthy

It’s great to see Brian Schneider and Moises Alou back in the dugout today. Schneider just got out of the hospital after a six day stay to treat an infected thumb.

Alou is coming back from hernia surgery and expected to come off the disabled list on Friday.

Getting two starters back in one week will be a big boost to the team both on the field and psychologically. The team is getting back to full strength and I believe will show improvement on the field.

Alou May Have Fractured Ankle

Multiple media sources are reporting that Moises Alou will be back in New York tomorrow. An MRI in Florida revealed that he may have a small fracture in his ankle. Although Angel Pagan and Endy Chavez are playing well in left field, it would be great to have Alou’s power right-handed bat back in the lineup.

Brian Schneider is still hospitalized for an infection in his thumb. He’s expected to be back with the team Monday and may be ready to play on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Chipper Jones Out Today

Sports Illustrated is reporting that Chipper Jones injured his back in the locker room while getting dressed for the game today. He’ll be out of the Atlanta Braves lineup for today’s game.

Jones is a really hot hitter right now, so the Mets caught a break here. Not that I hope for anyone to get hurt. Hopefully, Jones isn’t seriously injured.
