Braves 7 – Mets 1 July 19, 2009

The Mets lose three out of four to the Braves in Atlanta this week. To add insult to injury (literally), Fernando Nieve had to leave the game on a cart in the top of the second inning with a strained quad muscle. He was legging out a grounder and came up lame after crossing first base. Get ready for Jon Niese‘s season debut.

The Mets offense only had 6 hits and 1 walk in the game. There is no offense from this team. Daniel Murphy (hitting .238) was batting third in the order. He couldn’t even stick with most teams in the league and he’s hitting third for the Mets. This is beyond ugly.

The Mets head to Washington, then Houston.

Fernando Nieve (3-3 3.03) vs. Javier Vazquez (6-7 2.95)

TV: ESPN RadioWFAN

What to watch: The Mets try to get the split of the four games series if they can win tonight. Nieve has lost three straight games now. Although he didn’t pitch badly in his last start giving up 3 runs in 6 innings to the Reds. Vazquez is 2-2 in his last four decisions but he hasn’t given up more than 2 runs in a start since June 17. Don’t forget that it’s a Sunday night game on ESPN but they’re starting at 6:00 because of the ESPY award show.

Report: Mets To Sign Lugo, Release Redding

Tim ReddingThe Mets are reported to be continuing their “hold on” strategy for this season by working out Julio Lugo in the Dominican Republic. Lugo was designated for assignment this week by the Boston Red Sox. There’s no way that any team is going to claim him, and highly unlikely that he can be traded within 10 days before he has to be released. Lugo’s contract is huge, $9M this year and $9M next year that could vest into $9M for 2011 as well.

The Daily News is reporting that to make room on the roster for Lugo, the Mets will release Tim Redding. He’s been a complete bust of a free agent. The Mets will have to eat the rest of his $2.25M salary for this season. Redding is 1-3 with a 7.22 ERA and recently lost his spot in the rotation and hasn’t fared well in the bullpen. The Mets haven’t been happy since day one with Redding when he showed up in spring training reportedly 20 pounds overweight and injured.

Lugo is 33 years old and doesn’t add anything significant to the Mets. This is a move just to help them complete the rest of their games this season, not win the games. Don’t hold your breath for Roy Halladay, Matt Holliday, or any other difference makers at the trade deadline. This isn’t the Mets year and the front office knows it.

Johan Santana (10-7 3.09) vs. Kenshin Kawakami (5-6 4.26)

TV: FOX RadioWFAN

What to watch: As usual, Santana has to stop the bleeding with a great start not a good one. It seems like the Mets have been putting him in this position for a year and a half now. He was lights out against the Reds over 7 innings in his last start. We’ll see if he can do it again today. Gary Sheffield is out after leaving the game with leg cramps last night. He may be able to pinch hit today. Kawakami has been pitching well and hasn’t lost a decision since May 27. So this won’t be an easy task today.

Braves 11 – Mets 0 July 17, 2009

The Mets suffered a brutal and embarrassing defeat in Atlanta tonight. Watching this game it felt as if the season was disappearing before my eyes. Mike Pelfrey was absolutely putrid tonight giving up 9 runs in 4.1 innings. Once Pelfrey gave up 3 runs in the first inning, the game was all but over. The Mets don’t have the offense to overcome an early deficit like that.

Speaking of the Mets offense, they managed 2 hits and 3 walks in the entire game. Gary Sheffield left the game in the bottom of the fifth inning after chasing down a fly ball. He appeared to have a hamstring problem. But it was later diagnosed as just a cramp.

The Mets get beaten down in their first two games out of the All-Star break. The second half of the season is getting ugly.
