Mets 3 – Red Sox 2 May 23, 2009

The Mets pulled out a dramatic win in the ninth inning capped by a 2-run homer by Omir Santos off Jonathan Papelbon for the win. The home run was reviewed on video by the umpires. It just barely made it over the line at the top of the Green Monster, but it was a home run.

Mike Pelfrey went toe-to-toe with Josh Beckett for 7 innings giving up only 2 runs on 6 hits and 1 walk. He looked very good all night, both runs for the Sox were scored in the first inning and Pelfrey shut them out for the next six.

J.J. Putz closed the game because Francisco Rodriguez suffered serious back spasms before the game. He was taken to the hospital in Boston for an examination.

It was a great win in several respects for the Mets. Not the least important is that it was just a dramatic win of a great game in itself. But it also was the fifth win for the Mets on this ten game road trip, which solidifies this as a successful trip. If you can go on the road (and the west coast) and not lose any ground in the standings then you’re doing pretty well.

Game Preview: Mets at Red Sox [Game 42] May 23, 2009

red_sox_logoNew York Mets (22-19 Road: 10-11) at Boston Red Sox (25-17 Home: 16-5) 7:10 pm

Mike Pelfrey (4-1 4.61) vs. Josh Beckett (4-2 5.85)

TV: SNY  RadioWFAN

What to watch: Pelfrey’s last start was very forgettable with what he described as “the yips”. Whatever the yips are caused Pelfrey to balk three times on his way to a loss in San Francisco. Beckett has generally pitched pretty well this season. He got bombed in a couple of starts that threw his ERA out of whack but he can be very tough when he’s on.

Mets 5 – Red Sox 3 May 22, 2009

I didn’t get to see the whole game. I had to watch the speed version on TiVo. The Mets offense was pretty consistent and the defense was consistently bad. Three more errors in the field. And it’s hard to believe that the Mets could win a game in which they commit three errors. That’s lucky.

Johan Santana was great… again. He was in trouble a couple of times but got out of it without any major damage. He ended up going 7 innings and giving up 2 runs on 7 hits and 1 walk.

Ramon Martinez had 2 more errors at shortstop. I like him as a role player, he gets some timely hits including an RBI single in the fourth. But he just can’t pick it at short. He’s way over his head.

Johan Santana (5-2 1.36) vs. Daisuke Matsuzaka (0-1 12.79)

TV: SNY  RadioWFAN

What to watch: The Red Sox come into the series having swept the hot Blue Jays at home. The Mets have lost four in a row and just got swept in LA. Matsuzaka is just coming off the DL after suffering from a stiff shoulder (and bad pitching). Santana wasn’t his usual self against the Giants in his last start but still got the win.

Mets Jose Reyes Avoids Disabled List

Jose ReyesMets shortstop Jose Reyes flew to Boston with the team last night, then took a flight to New York with head trainer Ray Ramirez according to the team. He had an MRI and saw a doctor today who diagnosed the condition that led him to miss five games as tendinitis behind his right calf.

It looks like Reyes will re-join the team for tomorrow night’s game against the Boston Red Sox and hope for the best. Judging by the fact that the Mets called up Ramon Martinez to replace Alex Cora on the roster, there really isn’t a good alternative in the minors if Reyes does have to go on the disabled list.

Unfortunately, we’ll probably be seeing more of Martinez at short in the Boston series. I’d like to see Fernando Tatis mixed in there just to have some offense out of the position as well.

Mark DeRosa To Mets Trade Talks Confirmed

Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse has confirmation from a team official that the Mets and Cleveland Indians are in talks about sending Mark DeRosa to the Mets. Of course, nothing is official yet and trade talks happen all the time that don’t ever pan out.

The Indians are astonishingly bad this season. The only team in the majors with a worse record is the Washington Nationals. The Indians could dump the rest of DeRosa’s $5.5 million contract at this point. He’s not going to help them anyway. They’re beyond help this season.

DeRosa, born in Passaic, NJ, just turned 34 years-old in February. He easily had the biggest offensive season of his career in 2008 with the Chicago Cubs batting .285/ .376/ .481. He’s a very versitle fielder and played 32 games at shortstop in 2007.

With Jose Reyes facing a good possibility of going on the disabled list and a major question mark at first base, this would be a solid move for the Mets. I have to assume that the Indians would want either Bobbly Parnell or Jonathan Niese plus some lower level prospects. I’d hate to give one of those guys up but that’s the nature of the game.
