Angels 7 – Mets 3 June 19, 2011

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL - FEBRUARY 24: Jon Niese #...

Jon Niese got hit hard in this one to the tune of 4 earned runs in 4 innings. He gave up 8 hits including a 3-run triple by Erik Aybar in the second inning that started to put the game out of reach. He just didn’t have it today. And Manny Acosta came in for the sixth and seventh innings and threw gas on the fire by allowing two solo homers. One was by light-hitting catcher Jeff Mathis and the other was by struggling Vernon Wells.

The Mets offense couldn’t get anything going against rookie Tyler Chatwood. All 3 runs they scored were in the bottom of the ninth off reliever Bobby Cassevah. So the game wasn’t as close as the final score indicates.

The Mets lose the home series and this is a bad one. Losing to a west coast team in inter-league play is a horrible series loss. The Mets are off tomorrow and the awful A’s come to town on Tuesday for three games.

Los Angeles Angels (34-38) at New York Mets (35-36) 1:10pm

Tyler Chatwood (3-4 4.20) vs. Jon Niese (6-5 3.46)

TV: SNY              Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets and Angels play the rubber game of the series for Father’s Day today. It should be a great weather day for everyone going to the game with their father. The Angels have Chatwood on the mound today, a rookie who’s been very inconsistent. The Angels have lost the last three games that he started. The Royals roughed him up badly in his last start for 5 runs in 3.2 innings.

Niese has been fantastic in his last six starts. He hasn’t given up more than 2 runs in a game during that span and has only allowed 1 home run. He’s won three straight decisions and is really in a good groove right now.

Mets 6 – Angels 1 June 18, 2011

Mike Pelfrey was the story of the night. He threw his third career complete game allowing 1 run on 5 hits and no walks. The only run he allowed was a solo shot by Mark Trumbo. The shot was legitimate too. It was an opposite field homer to the deepest part of right center field. Otherwise, Pelfrey was completely in control and it was the third straight game that he didn’t walk anyone.  Terry Collins allowed him to go 123 pitches deep and it was a tremendous showing.

The Mets offense was keyed by four stolen bases against Dan Haren. He was clearly rattled by the Mets running wild against him. The Mets had a collection of hits to score as usual. But the big hit for the Mets came from Carlos Beltran. He hit a 2-run homer in the fifth inning that appeared to go over Shea Bridge. It was a bomb!

The Mets and Angels will play the rubber game of the series tomorrow afternoon.

Jose Reyes the Yankees and Mets Fans

NEW YORK - MAY 21: Derek Jeter #2 of the New ...

I had been reading up on the many different teams that Jose Reyes may be a good fit for joining in August and also in 2012. But the only one that got my interest was an article in the NY Daily News anointing Reyes the next Yankee shortstop.

So I’m thinking ahead to the worst case scenario and wondering what would happen here in NY if Reyes took over for Derek Jeter at shortstop either this year or next? It’s a logical “baseball” move but you could be damaging two franchises at the same time. This isn’t Darryl Strawberry or Dwight Gooden playing in the twilight of their careers being given one last shot by the Yankees. This is one of the best shortstops in the game, in his prime, crossing over to the dark side!

What Would Yankee Fans Think?

Yankee fans will not be happy if their beloved captain is benched in favor of Jose Reyes. Ok, Jose is clearly better right now but Jeter has meant so much more than Reyes ever will mean to the Mets in the last 10 years. At a very early age Jeter played with professionalism, class, and poise while keeping his head and his teammates heads in every game. It’s this discipline at an early age that allowed Jeter to be one of the greats of baseball who can show off 4 World Series rings. It’s this same discipline I wish Jose had.

At 28 years old and with only 10 weeks of prime Jose Reyes baseball to judge him by this year, Jose is clearly playing for a contract. He may be playing up the fact that he has finally matured but we won’t know until he plays at this level for a full year and not in a contract year.

Can the Yankees afford him? Yes, most definitely. Would they want him though? Yankee fans would murder Reyes for a typical Reyes boneheaded bobble or for watching the ball roll under his glove or even getting picked off of first base because he was working on seeing his reflection in one of his gold chains.

Yankee fans would boo him incessantly for every little mistake, he would never live down Jeter’s legacy, even if he won a ring or two and he would have to get a haircut. Odds are if the Yankees were to get Reyes it would do more harm than good with their fans but would that be enough to stop them from pulling the trigger on such a trade? Angels 4 – Mets 3 June 17, 2011

NEW YORK - JUNE 17: Chris Capuano #38 of the ...

Chris Capuano was solid again but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Angels. It was a back and forth game throughout the night. But Justin Turner’s throwing error in the second inning allowed an unearnred run to score was the difference in the game.

Capuano went 6 innings and allowed 2 earned runs but he did it on 92 pitches. So it wasn’t the sharpest game he’s had this season but it should have been good enough to win the game.

The Mets offense was led by Angel Pagan who was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s. He did a great job of putting the ball in play that scored runs and kept innings alive. Ronny Paulino was also 2 for 4 with 2 doubles.

Los Angeles Angels (33-37) at New York Mets (34-35) 7:10pm

Joel Pineiro (2-3 4.03) vs. Chris Capuano (5-6 4.40)

TV: SNY              Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Angels are in town for three games this weekend after taking two of three in Seattle this week. They’re currently in third place in the AL West, 3 games behind the Rangers. Pineiro has been getting hit hard recently. He’s allowed 4 earned runs in each of his last five starts.

Capuano has been pitching really well lately. He’s won his last two starts and allowed only 1 run in 13 innings over that span.
