There was some celebrating going on last night by Mets fans after the 2-1 win over the Yankees in the Bronx. It was only one game but beating the Yankees in their stadium and finally getting back to .500 was something to enjoy for one night. As Mets fans, we’ve had to find small victories in recent years.

Justin Turner had another big night and R.A. Dickey finally got his first win since his season debut nearly two months ago. Here’s some post-game audio from the team regarding the win last night.

The Mets finally got the kind of start from R.A. Dickey that they’ve been looking for. He still didn’t look as sharp as he did last season but he certainly pitched well enough to get the job done. He went 6 innings allowing 1 run on 4 hits and 3 walks. It was a great job against a solid Yankees lineup.

The Mets offense was pretty weak except for you know who… Justin Turner. This guy is on fire going 3 for 4 tonight with a big RBI double in the fourth inning. He’s hitting .364 and has an RBI in 6 straight games. Daniel Murphy chipped in with a solo homer in the sixth inning from the two hole to cap the scoring for the win.

The Mets looked pretty impressive against a good Yankees team. It’s great that this team with six guys that could be in Buffalo right now are playing some decent ball.

R.A. Dickey (1-5 5.08) vs. Freddie Garcia (2-3 3.22)

What to watch: The Mets and Yankees start up a three game series tonight in the Bronx. The Yanks are coming into the series with a three game winning streak and the Mets have won two.

Dickey’s season has been terrible. He still hasn’t won since his first start of the season and he got hit hard again in his last start in Houston. He certainly looks like the pre-2010 Dickey this season.

Garcia has had some good games this year but the Red Sox hit him hard in his last start. He gave up 4 earned runs in 5.1 innings and he could fall apart anytime. He’s 34 years old but looks like he’s been around forever.

The Mets swept the two-game series and didn’t allow the offensively challenged Nats to score a run. Dillon Gee took a no-hitter to 5.2 innings and, of course, it was Livan Hernandez who broke it up with a single. The Mets got the final out on a disputed play at first base that appeared to pull Daniel Murphy off the base on a throw by Justin Turner.

Livan Hernandez (3-5 3.92) vs. Dillon Gee (2-0 4.44)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets are going for the sweep of the short series behind Gee this afternoon if the weather holds out. The Mets have won both games Gee started since he came out of the bullpen to join the rotation. He didn’t pitch particularly well in Houston but got enough run support to avoid a loss. He went 5 innings and gave up 4 runs.

Hernandez had taken a loss in three straight starts coming into today’s game. Although he was a hard luck loser in his last start in Florida going 7 innings and allowing only 1 run. The Nats are 3-6 in games he started this year.

The Mets won their first shutout of the season in dreadful playing conditions. The rain was falling throughout the game and had to be some of the worst playing conditions I can remember seeing. There were literally puddles on the infield. There’s no way they should have been playing that game.

Jon Niese had an excellent start going 7 innings only allowing 6 hits and a walk. He looked tremendous even in the bad weather with his control working really well for him. It was a great performance and lowered his ERA to 4.39.

The top of the Mets batting order was working too. Jose Reyes had 3 hits and raised his average to .322. But once again Justin Turner had the timely big hit with a 2-run double in the sixth inning. He’s hitting .333 and seems to have a knack for getting hits and the right time.

The Mets and Nats wrap up the short series tomorrow afternoon.

Washington Nationals (20-21) at New York Mets (19-22) 7:10pm

Tom Gorzelanny (2-2 3.40) vs. Jon Niese (2-4 5.03)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Nationals come to town for a two game series near .500 on the season. Gorzelanny had been pitching really well until his last start against the Marlins. He only went 4.2 innings and gave up 4 runs including 3 home runs.

Niese got pushed back after last night’s rain out. His last start wasn’t great but he got 3 home runs of support from Carlos Beltran in Colorado and got a win. He gave up 5 runs in 6.1 innings. But it’s tough to judge a curve ball pitcher on a start in Colorado.
