King Felix, Mariners Over Mets 5-2

Felix Hernandez looked unstoppable for the Mariners into the fifth inning. He only gave up two hits and one run. More importantly, he hit a grand slam in the top of the second inning off Johan Santana. It was the first grand slam by an American League pitcher in 37 years before the designated hitter rule was instituted.

In the fifth inning Carlos Beltran doubled, stole third and came in to score on a wild pitch. His slide went into King Felix covering home and Felix had to leave the game with an ankle injury. Surprisingly, the Mariners bullpen shut the Mets down for the final 4.1 innings of the game.

The Mets did rally in the ninth with a couple of hits but it was too little too late. The Mets really had very little offense going all night. Beltran and Jose Reyes had two hits each and that was it for the team.

Pelfrey Leads Mets To 3-1 Win Over Rockies

Mike Pelfrey went 5.2 innings for his fourth win of the season. He gave up no runs on three hits and five walks to go along with five strikeouts.

Jose Reyes led off the game with a triple for the second consecutive game, then scored on a single by David Wright. Carlos Beltran hit a long two run home run to right field into the second deck in the third inning. That was all of the scoring the Mets needed to get the win.

The Mets go home with a new manager after a 4-2 road trip and move to 3.5 games behind the first place Philadelphia Phillies.

Delgado, Nixon Homer As Mets Top Rockies 7-2

Pedro Feliciano, Joe Smith, and Aaron Heilman worked clean through the last 2.1 innings of the game.

Carlos Delgado hit his 11th home run off Aaron Cook in the Mets five run second inning. Trot Nixon also hit his first home run as a Met. Carlos Beltran was hitting screaming line drives all over the field tonight in a 3.for 5 effort.

The Mets absolutely look like they had an extra spring in their step tonight. It looks like the momentum from the 10th inning win in Los Angeles on Wednesday carried over to tonight’s game.

Video: Mets Players On Willie Randolph

The Mets “core” players talk about the decision to fire Willie. Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes, and David Wright do the talking. Beltran is particularly insightful about the players causing Willie to lose his job.

Beltran 2 HR Powers Mets 9-6 Over Angels

Carlos Beltran hit two solo homers, one in the first and one in the third inning. Mike Pelfrey got his first win since April 15.

Pelfrey’s line was six innings pitched giving up eight hits and two walks. He had no strikeouts. He gave up six runs but he was shaky in the seventh and didn’t get any outs. Pedro Feliciano came in to relieve in the seventh and was terrible giving up two RBI hits. He only got one out in the seventh.

Aaron Heilman came into the game in the seventh after Feliciano was ineffective. I thought that the Angels would break it open at that point but Heilman locked down the inning with two strikeouts.

Billy Wagner was a little shaky in the ninth inning again. He gave up a hit and a walk but got out of the inning with a line drive to Jose Reyes for a double play at second base.

Reyes was 2 for 4 with 3 runs scored and a stolen base as well.

Mets Rally But Lose To Rangers 8-7

image

The bullpen failed the Mets again today. The offense had rallies in the eighth and ninth innings, but they couldn’t quite come back enough to make up for the bullpen.

John Maine left after 6.1 innings and a couple of men on base. He had a decent game up to that point giving up three runs on seven hits and no walks. Pedro Feliciano and Joe Smith came in to finish up the seventh and both were terrible. Ian Kinsler hit a huge home run off Smith. Then in the eighth innings Milton Bradley hit another long home run off Scott Schoenweiss.

The Mets offense was slow to get started but woke up late in the game. Carlos Delgado hit a homer off the scoreboard in the fourth inning and Carlos Beltran hit one to deep center in the sixth.

The Mets started a rally in the eighth and scored three runs. Inexplicably, with two outs Brian Schneider tried to tag on a fly to shallow right field. Bradley has a gun out there and threw out Schneider by three steps. Sandy Alomar made a big mistake on that call.

The Mets rallied again in the ninth inning and scored two runs but just couldn’t keep it going. Trot Nixon was in the middle of everything in his first game as a Met. He went 2 for 3 with a double off the wall in right and two walks. Nice start for his season with the Mets.

Minaya Provides Meek Support For Randolph

Prior to tonight’s game Mets GM Omar Minaya addressed the rumors swirling that manager Willie Randolph’s firing is imminent. Minaya re-affirmed his statements from two weeks ago that Randolph has his support and the support of the Wilpons. However, he didn’t commit to Randolph managing the Mets for the entire season.

There were plenty of columns written on the topic this afternoon. Perhaps the best one was written by Fox Sports.

Some quotes from the column:

"Bottom line is, I’m just not going to answer every report that’s out there," Minaya said. "This is a game of performance and you have to do certain things."

Minaya didn’t rule out personnel changes, either, and said: "Nobody is untouchable."

"They tell us he’s going to be here. He’s our manager and nothing has changed," Carlos Beltran said. "It’s been rough lately but we need to move on. We need to play better, that’s the bottom line."

Once again, we get a statement of support for Randolph that lacks emphasis. If they’re going to keep Randolph they need to come out and say that he’s here for the year. Until then, the speculation will continue. Clearly, this is a distraction for the players.
