Mets Injury News- El Duque, Pagan, Nixon

The Mets injury list is a deep one and is certainly casting shadows over the Mets needs at the non-waiver trading deadline. Here’s the latest:

  • El Duque- Another setback with his right foot. After leaving the game in Binghamton after one inning because of discomfort in his foot, he visited a doctor in New York about the problem again. The Mets will have a shoe specially made for him and orthotics to try to relieve the pain he’s experiencing.
  • Angel Pagan- It  looks like he’s done for the year with a torn labrum in his shoulder. He’s going for a second opinion but the initial diagnosis is that he needs season ending shoulder surgery.
  • Trot Nixon- Unconfirmed reports that he’s done for the season due to a hernia operation.

With Pagan and Nixon possibly out for the year, and Ryan Church a serious question mark, the Mets will probably need to jump into the corner outfield market before the trading deadline. I would assume that they would go with a B-level player as opposed to emptying the top prospects for a Jason Bay or Xavier Nady type of player.

The Mets activated Ryan Church from the disabled list today and he was inserted into the lineup against the Yankees. It’s the first game he’s played since June 5th after suffering from post concussion syndrome.

To make room on the roster the Mets put outfielder Trot Nixon on the disabled list with a strained groin that he suffered in Los Angeles last week.

Mets Injury News: Ryan Church

Ryan Church played the DH for the Brooklyn Cyclones last night and went 3 for 3. He’s scheduled to play the field tonight in Brooklyn. Manager Jerry Manuel said there’s a chance that Church could be activated for Sunday’s Mets game against the Yankees.

Church left a hole in the Mets lineup the size of Flushing when he got hurt last month with his second concussion of the season. The Mets need him back, at full strength, badly.

It’ll be interesting to see what the Mets do to make room on the roster for Church. Most likely Marlon Anderson or Trot Nixon will be designated for assignment. Both would have to clear waivers, but I doubt that they would be claimed. Anderson might not want to go to New Orleans and opt to be a free agent but Nixon may go to Triple-A. Nixon started the season in Triple-A with the D-Backs organization.

image The Mets got what they wanted out of John Maine. He went deeper into the game on fewer pitches and improved his record to 7-5. His line was: image

 

 

Pedro Feliciano, Joe Smith, and Aaron Heilman worked clean through the last 2.1 innings of the game.

Carlos Delgado hit his 11th home run off Aaron Cook in the Mets five run second inning. Trot Nixon also hit his first home run as a Met. Carlos Beltran was hitting screaming line drives all over the field tonight in a 3.for 5 effort.

The Mets absolutely look like they had an extra spring in their step tonight. It looks like the momentum from the 10th inning win in Los Angeles on Wednesday carried over to tonight’s game.

Mets Rally But Lose To Rangers 8-7

The bullpen failed the Mets again today. The offense had rallies in the eighth and ninth innings, but they couldn’t quite come back enough to make up for the bullpen.

John Maine left after 6.1 innings and a couple of men on base. He had a decent game up to that point giving up three runs on seven hits and no walks. Pedro Feliciano and Joe Smith came in to finish up the seventh and both were terrible. Ian Kinsler hit a huge home run off Smith. Then in the eighth innings Milton Bradley hit another long home run off Scott Schoenweiss.

The Mets offense was slow to get started but woke up late in the game. Carlos Delgado hit a homer off the scoreboard in the fourth inning and Carlos Beltran hit one to deep center in the sixth.

The Mets started a rally in the eighth and scored three runs. Inexplicably, with two outs Brian Schneider tried to tag on a fly to shallow right field. Bradley has a gun out there and threw out Schneider by three steps. Sandy Alomar made a big mistake on that call.

The Mets rallied again in the ninth inning and scored two runs but just couldn’t keep it going. Trot Nixon was in the middle of everything in his first game as a Met. He went 2 for 3 with a double off the wall in right and two walks. Nice start for his season with the Mets.

Mets Trade For Trot Nixon

The Mets acquired Trot Nixon from the Arizona D’Backs. Nixon has been playing for the Triple-A Tucson Sidewinders this season. His line is .309/ .437/ .558 with 15 doubles, 10 home runs, and 31 RBI’s in 181 at-bat’s over 58 games.

Mets GM Omar Minaya announced the trade immediately after tonight’s game against the Rangers. He expects Nixon to be at Shea tomorrow in time for the second game against the Rangers. The Mets traded cash or a player to be named later. Most likely Robinson Cancel will be headed right back to New Orleans.

Nixon is 34 years old. His major league career spans eleven years, most recently with the Cleveland Indians last season. Typically most telling is his 162 game average which is .275/ .364/ .466 with 20 home runs and 83 RBI’s.

He has a reputation as a hard-nosed, gritty player. That’s something that the Mets seem to be lacking this season. Nixon made $3 million last year with the Indians and signed a one year minor league deal with the D’Backs this season.
