Mets Bullpen Falls Apart Again In 7-6 Loss To Braves

The Mets had a 4-3 lead going into the bottom of the eighth inning. Mike Pelfrey didn’t have one of his best games, but it was good enough. He went six innings giving up three runs, a quality start. Then came the infamous Mets bullpen. It’s incredible that nobody can be trusted in the bullpen. I can’t remember such poor performances as a group as the 2008 Mets bullpen.

Schoenweiss, Smith, Feliciano, and Heilman all contributed to today’s disaster in Atlanta. It’s the same old story.

Another great offensive game by Carlos Delgado was wasted. He went 4 for 5 with 2 runs, 3 RBI’s, and a dramatic home run in the ninth to get the Mets within one run of tying the game.

Unbelievable…

Mets Blow Lead Late, Lose To Braves 3-2

The Mets lost the first game of today’s single admission double header in the eighth inning. Johan Santana pitched into the eighth but left after giving up two straight singles to lead off the inning. He pitched a superb game through seven giving up no runs but ran out of gas in the eighth after throwing 113 pitches in the game.

Scott Schoenweiss and Brian Stokes were the problem in the eighth allowing three runs to score including the inherited runners from Santana. It’s incredible how many games that Santana has left with a lead only to end up as a Mets loss.

Carlos Delgado continued his torrid hitting going 2 for 4 with 1 run scored and one double. His average is up to .266 now.

The Phillies won today so the Mets lead is down to two games and the Mets magic number holds at 14.

Delgado’s Mets Contract May Vest at $16M

I knew there was a clause in Carlos Delgado’s contract that vested it if he finished at a specified position in MVP voting. But I searched the Internet and couldn’t find the details.

ESPN published those details yesterday and it’s really interesting that the Marlins (originators of this contract) created their own point system for MLB awards and the impact on the option year of Delgado’s contract.

In other words, if Delgado wins the World Series MVP award and finishes in the top six in the regular-season MVP voting, he would reach 30 award points — and automatically vest his option at an extra $4 million, guaranteeing him $16 million for next year.

If he can pull off winning the World Series MVP and finishing in the top six of the MVP voting, Delgado deserves that $16M option.

Carlos Delgado Is Not The NL MVP

To the surprise of everyone that watched Mets baseball in April, May, and June of this season Carlos Delgado has worked his way into the conversation for National League Most Valuable Player. Sure, he’s hit some monsterous home runs. And he’s even carried the Mets at times since the All-Star break. But he’s no MVP.

Delgado has turned in a line that’s more than respectable at .264| 34 HR | 104 RBI. If the Mets continue on their current path to the playoffs he’ll certainly be in the MVP discussion. But look at what Mr. Consistency Albert Pujols has done at .360| 33 HR| 99 RBI for a team that’s nine games out of their division lead. There’s no comparison in my mind.

Ryan Braun of the Brew Crew may be the MVP if the Brewers make the playoffs. I think he’ll have several MVP’s in his trophy case by the time his career is over.

Carlos Delgado can’t sleep walk through three months of the season and be the MVP. You just can’t make up for that type of ineffective performance over such a large portion of the season. Read Fox Sports Dayn Perry’s column arguing that Delgado isn’t even the most valuable Mets player. He’s got it right.

Delgado Homers Twice Again In Win Over Nats 10-8

It’s incredible that a guy who couldn’t hit his weight for the first two months of the season in now being talked about in the NL MVP conversation. But Carlos Delgado did it again tonight with two homers (35 for the season) and back to back with Carlos Beltran in the sixth inning.

Oliver Perez reverted to his early season form giving up seven runs over 3.1 innings. An ugly game for Perez tonight, it was reminiscent of his early season beatings he took with regularity.

The bullpen held on with only Brandon Knight allowing a run in the fifth. Luis Ayala got a chance to close out a game against his former team. That must’ve felt good.

The Phillies lost so the Mets lead goes to 2.5 games with the magic number at 16.

Delgado 2 HR’s Powers Mets Over Phillies 6-3

Carlos Delgado went on a tear in the second game of the double header against the Phillies. He ripped Cole Hamels for two homers and four RBI’s.

Johan Santana did his usual 7.1 innings and allowing two runs. He’s a machine at producing very good starts. It’s amazing how consistent he is.

Luis Ayala allowed a run in the ninth but it wasn’t enough for the Phillies to mount a comeback. Ayala is going to be a “cross your fingers” closer possibly for the rest of the season. That’s not a good feeling.
