Preview: Mets at Cubs Aug. 29, 2009

cubs logo.pngNew York Mets (59-70 Road: 24-39) at Chicago Cubs (64-62 Home: 37-24) 4:10pm

Bobby Parnell (3-6 5.08) vs. Ryan Dempster (7-7 4.07)

TV: FOX

What to watch: The Cubs are 2-4 in the last 6 games that Dempster started. Dempster certainly isn’t living up to the 4-year/$52 million contract he signed before this season. His career year last season at 17-6 with a 2.96 ERA is proving to be an aberration. The “Parnell Experiment” has really hit the wall. In his last two starts he’s given up 14 earned runs in 8 innings. If the wind is blowing out at Wrigley today this could be a very long game.

Cubs 5 – Mets 2 Aug. 28, 2009

CHICAGO - AUGUST 28: Pitcher Pat Misch #48 of ...

The Mets and Cubs were tied 1-1 after the first two innings. Pat Misch pitched an unbelievable game too. He went 7 strong innings only allowing the 1 run on 6 hits and 2 walks.

The Mets took a 2-1 lead on a double off the wall in left by Fernando Tatis in the eighth. But the bottom of the inning was a disaster for Brian Stokes. And he’s been pitching so well lately. He gave up 3 hits and a walk while only getting one out. One of those hits was a 3-run bomb by Alfonso Soriano. That was the game.

The Mets and Cubs play two more day games over the weekend.

Mets News Aug. 28,2009 Wilpons, Fans, Injuries

NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 23: Johan Santana #57 of...

The Mets make their annual trip to Wrigley for a weekend series. There are a few stories that peaked my interest today that I thought you might like. By the way, if you haven’t been to Wrigley it’s a fantastic venue for a game. The stadium is still holding up really well, the neighborhood is perfect, and the Cubs are perennial losers so you have a pretty good chance to see the Mets win in most seasons.

Anyway, here’s the news for today:

  • Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports gets into the Mets injury situation. Basically, he accuses the Mets of not taking proper care of their players.
  • Matthew Cerrone of MetsBlog links to an article that says that the Wilpons lost so much money in the Madoff scandal that they’ll be forced to sell the team as early as next season. I can think of several readers that will be thrilled to read that.
  • The Daily News has an article about how nobody showed up to watch the Mets-Marlins on Wednesday at the Ziegfeld Theater. Big surprise! Mets fans are smart. This team isn’t worth paying to see.

Pat Misch (0-1 4.09) vs. Ted Lilly (9-8 3.40)

TV: SNY

What to watch: The Mets are in Chicago for a 3-game weekend series. The Cubs have lost five of their last seven games and so have the Mets. Lilly is 2-4 since June 14 and has given up 9 earned runs in his last 14 innings. This is Misch’s first start as a Met, he did start 7 games for the Giants last year. The Mets have lost 12 of the 15 games that Misch appeared in this season.

Video: Ken Rosenthal Previews Mets-Cubs Series

LOS ANGELES, CA - OCTOBER 04: Rich Harden #40...

Fox Sports Ken Rosenthal previews this weekend’s Mets-Cubs series at Wrigley. It’s funny that they introduce that piece as a preview of the “great” match-up’s on Fox this weekend. I’d hardly call this series “great”. I think that I’d use the adjective “weak”. Both teams are in the tank and the Mets already threw in the towel for this season. The rumors are that the Cubs have too by putting Rich Harden on waivers with word that he was claimed by the Twins.

Mets Win 7-6 Over Cubs In Bottom Of Ninth

The Mets and Cubs played through the rain tonight to finish nine innings, and the Mets needed every one of them. Pedro Martinez was bad again giving up five runs over six innings, including two runs in the first inning.

Ricardo Rincon came in and gave up a first pitch homer to Micah Hoffpauir, his second homer of the night. It looked like the game and possibly the season was lost.

Surprisingly, the Mets fought back scoring runs in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings. Carlos Beltran had the big RBI single in the ninth to score Jose Reyes with the winning run.

It’s a dramatic victory that showed this team isn’t dead yet.

On Deck- September 25- Cubs at Mets [Game 4]

Chicago Cubs (96-61 Road: 41-35) at New York Mets (87-71 Home: 46-31) 7:10pm

Rich Harden (5-1 1.66) vs. Pedro Martinez (5-6 5.50)

TV: SNY  Radio: WFAN

What to watch: This couldn’t be more of a critical game. The weather report is iffy and both teams really don’t want to see a postponement. Pedro has to be better than we’ve seen him lately to beat Harden.
