Mets Win 4-2 in Philly

Philadelphia, PA- Seven Met pitchers combined to finish the game and get the win for starter Oliver Perez (2-0).  Perez pitched 5.2 innings giving up no runs with seven strikeouts, but allowed five walks.  This was a classic Perez game, brilliant and unhittable at times and completely losing his command at others.Once again, David Wright was the offensive catalyst going 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s in the first inning off Jamie Moyer. Jose Reyes hit a two run homer in the seventh, his second of the year as part of a 2 for 4 day, scoring  2 runs, and stealing a base. His home run was celebrated in classic Reyes style with extended handshakes and a dance in the dugout. It’s great to see the “old” Reyes back!

Chase Utley hit a solo homer in the  seventh off Scott Schoenweiss. The eighth inning was pretty intense with Aaron Heilman coming in with one out and two men on. He gave up a hit to left by Carlos Ruiz to load the bases. I was hoping that Heilman wouldn’t implode in a key situation again. He came through with flying colors striking out pinch hitter Geoff Jenkins and Jayson Werth to leave the bases loaded.

Watching on TV it sounded like there was a pretty sizable Mets contingent in the stands. The game was halted briefly in the ninth inning while a scuffle in the right field stands was dealt with by stadium security. Of course, Fox didn’t show any of it on TV so I’ll have to check YouTube to see if there’s any video of what actually happened.

The Mets win the first two games in Philly to win the series and go for the sweep tomorrow. They’ve got a five game winning streak going and really look to be hitting their stride early in the season.

Johan Santana Brings Mets To Different Level

This is a must-read column from ESPN’s Jayson Stark, especially for everyone that boo’d Santana at Shea last week.

“There’s not too many players or pitchers in this game that can single-handedly bring your team to a different level,” said Mets third baseman David Wright, whose four-hit evening had a little something to do with the outcome, too. “But Johan is one of them.”

On Deck: April 19, 2008

New York Mets (9-6) at Philadelphia Phillies (8-9)   3:55pm

TV: Fox    Radio: WFAN

Oliver Perez (1-0) vs. Jamie Moyer (1-0)

What to watch:  The Mets are on a four game winning streak headed into the Fox game of the week. You never know what you’re going to get from Oliver Perez, and Jamie Moyer is pretty consistent but not a lot of fun to watch. David Wright’s been hot at the plate and Citizens Bank Park is a good place to be when that happens. It’s still unknown if Jimmy Rollins will be back from his uncle’s funeral in Oakland in time for the game today.

Mets Take First Game in Philly 6-4

Philadelphia, PA- The Mets held on to win 6-4 in front of over 45,000 in Philadelphia tonight. Johan Santana was stellar, pitching seven innings with 10 strikeouts, no walks, and giving up three runs. It would’ve been only one run if Aaron Heilman hadn’t come into the game in the eighth and promptly given up a pinch hit home run to Greg Dobbs.

Can we all agree now that Johan Santana shouldn’t be boo’d? If you feel the compulsion to boo a home player, make it Aaron Heilman. He gave up the big bomb tonight. Granted, he’s pitched three good games prior to tonight. Maybe there isn’t anyone that deserved to be boo’d at home right now. How about that?

David Wright was 4 for 4 with two doubles and a triple. He’s on fire right now. Brian Schneider had a nice offensive game as well going 3 for 4. He’s hitting .306/.306/.375 so far.

Jose Reyes stole second and took a header into Chase Utley’s knee. He stayed in the game but I think Willie Randolph should give him the day off tomorrow considering his hamstring kept him out of a couple games this week. He could use a day right now.

The Mets and Phillies do it again tomorrow on Fox at 3:55pm.

Mets Pound Nationals 6-0

The Mets trounced the Nationals 6-0 amid the Jackie Robinson Day celebration at Shea Stadium. The biggest story of the game was Mike Pelfrey (2-0) pitching seven scoreless innings. He only gave up five hits and two walks to go along with four strikeouts. He threw 100 pitches, 65 for strikes and looked very confident on the mound.

The Mets offense was powered by Jose Reyes just back from a mild hamstring strain, and David Wright. Reyes was 4 for 5 and a home run shy of the cycle. He was caught stealing but looked good running the bases. Wright was 3 for 5 with 5 RBI’s and a home run. He was right on the ball all night.

Aaron Heilman pitched the eighth inning giving up a double and a walk but no runs. Duaner Sanchez returned to Shea for the first time since his car accident in July 2006. He pitched the ninth giving up only one hit. Sanchez got a nice reception from Mets fans when he was announced.

Paul LoDuca didn’t play because he was hit in the hand this weekend, so his serenade by Mets fans will have to wait until tomorrow night. Lastings Milledge got a mixed reception when he was announced.

I was surprised that Willie Randolph chose the bat Ryan Church second instead of Angel Pagan. Luis Castillo hit eighth in the order, which I’m afraid may be a common scenario over the next four years of his contract. I also probably would’ve let Pelfrey pitch the eighth inning considering this was only his second game of the season and he’s a young guy looking to build confidence.

Brewers Beat Mets 9-7 To Take Game, Series

New York Mets relief pitcher Jorge Sosa during a Mets/Detroit Tigers spring training game at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Florida.Image via WikipediaThe Brewers took the rubber game of the series in a poorly pitched game by both teams. Jorge Sosa took the loss for the Mets after entering the game in the fifth and pitching 1.2 innings and giving up 2 runs.

Both starting pitchers were terrible today. If there was a way to give Oliver Perez and Jeff Suppan a loss, this would be the game to do it.

The Brewers turned an eye popping 5 double plays in the game. For a team with no defense, they were able to shut the Mets down with timely double plays.

David Wright hit his third homer in the game and Brian Schneider was 3 for 5 with 3 RBI’s. Schneider’s defense was questionable once again today. Although he didn’t have any PB’s or errors, he couldn’t keep the ball in his glove. I’m starting to think there may be something wrong with him, like a hand injury, that we don’t know about.

The Mets are off on Monday and the Nationals come to town on Tuesday after ending their nine game losing streak today against Tom Glavine and the Braves.
