Braves 7 – Mets 1 July 19, 2009

The Mets lose three out of four to the Braves in Atlanta this week. To add insult to injury (literally), Fernando Nieve had to leave the game on a cart in the top of the second inning with a strained quad muscle. He was legging out a grounder and came up lame after crossing first base. Get ready for Jon Niese‘s season debut.

The Mets offense only had 6 hits and 1 walk in the game. There is no offense from this team. Daniel Murphy (hitting .238) was batting third in the order. He couldn’t even stick with most teams in the league and he’s hitting third for the Mets. This is beyond ugly.

The Mets head to Washington, then Houston.

Fernando Nieve (3-3 3.03) vs. Javier Vazquez (6-7 2.95)

TV: ESPN RadioWFAN

What to watch: The Mets try to get the split of the four games series if they can win tonight. Nieve has lost three straight games now. Although he didn’t pitch badly in his last start giving up 3 runs in 6 innings to the Reds. Vazquez is 2-2 in his last four decisions but he hasn’t given up more than 2 runs in a start since June 17. Don’t forget that it’s a Sunday night game on ESPN but they’re starting at 6:00 because of the ESPY award show.

Reds 3 – Mets 0 July 10, 2009

At this point, I’ve almost gotten used to the Mets getting shut out. It’s come to that point. They got a decent start from Fernando Nieve going 6 innings and giving up 3 runs. That’s enough to make a game of it on most night… for most teams.

Once again, the Mets had nothing going on offense at all. They only had 4 hits in the game and two were by Daniel Murphy. Again, there were no extra base hits. It’s ugly.

Bronson Arroyo got the complete game shutout tonight for the Reds.

Bronson Arroyo (8-8 5.85) vs. Fernando Nieve (3-2 2.73)

TV: SNY  Radio:  WFAN

What to watch: The Reds come to town having lost four of their last five games. Arroyo has had three terrible starts in a row and the Reds have lost six of the last seven that he started. Nieve has lost his last two starts after a remarkable start with the Mets. Although the Mets are really hurting right now, the Reds may be the cure to their ills.

Phillies 4 – Mets 1 July 4, 2009

The Mets got a decent effort from Fernando Nieve, the kind of effort that you would expect from a guy that was claimed off waivers in the spring. He gave up 3 earned runs over 5.2 innings, not bad. Once again, the bullpen was spotless over the final 2.1 innings.

The problem again today was defense and lack of hitting. David Wright let an easy foul ball drop next to him. It appeared that a fan yelled “Got it!” and Wright thought Alex Cora was calling for it. And Omir Santos dropped an easy foul ball too that led to a run.

On offense, Cora was 3 for 4 and that accounted for half of the Mets 6 hits in the game. Even with their “offense” lineup on the field, the Mets couldn’t do anything against Jamie Moyer.

The Mets need a win tomorrow afternoon to avoid the sweep in Philly.

Fernando Nieve (3-1 2.25) vs. Jamie Moyer (6-6 6.05)

TV: FOX  Radio:  WFAN

What to watch: Nieve gets another chance in the rotation because of injuries. But he got lit up by the Brewers for 11 hits and 3 runs in 3.1 innings in his last start. He may not get another start if he gets bombed like that again today on national TV. Moyer has been pitching a little better lately after an awful start to the season. The Phillies have won three of the last four games that Moyer started.

Game Preview: Mets at Brewers [Game 75] June 29, 2009

Milwaukee_BrewersNew York Mets (37-37 Road: 15-20) at Milwaukee Brewers (40-35 Home: 20-17) 7:08 pm

Fernando Nieve (3-0 1.31) vs. Braden Looper (5-4 5.16)

TV: ESPN  Radio:  WFAN

What to watch: The Mets limp into Milwaukee after getting swept at home by the Yankees. The Brewers are playing decent baseball having gone 3-3 in their last two series against the Twins and Giants. Former Met Looper hasn’t been pitching all that well recently though. The Brewers have lost three of the last four games that he started. I keep waiting for Nieve to fall apart but it hasn’t happened. I’ll be keeping my finger crossed tonight that he can keep his hot streak going for another start.
