Mets Finally Win For Santana; Top Nationals 4-3

Mets fans hung onto our hats for Joe Smith and Pedro Feliciano to get through the last two innings after another Johan Santana quality start. The typical script for these games has been the bullpen blowing the lead for Santana. Surprisingly, that didn’t happen tonight. Santana went seven strong innings giving up three runs for his tenth win of the season.

Carlos Beltran was 3 for 4 in the game. But the big RBI was Damion Easley’s on a hit by pitch in the eighth inning with the bases loaded. That put the Mets in front by a run and left the Mets crossing their fingers for the bullpen to come through. And they did…Finally!

Box score

On Deck- August 12- Mets at Nationals [Game 1]

New York Mets (62-55 Home: 36-22) at Washington Nationals (44-75 Home: 23-33) 7:10pm

Johan Santana (9-7 2.85) vs. Odalis Perez (5-8 4.10)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: Honestly, I don’t know how the Mets can recover from their devastating loss yesterday. I guess playing the worst team in baseball for three games could help. I’ve written this before over the last few weeks but I’ll say it again, the Mets need Santana to go nine innings himself if they expect to win this one. You can’t trust anyone in the bullpen right now.

Wright’s Walk Off Powers Mets Over Padres 5-3

David Wright hit a walk off two run homer with two outs in the ninth. What a way to atone for his blunders on the bases in the last two games. He went 3 for 5 on the day with two RBI’s.

It was a typical Johan Santana start. He was excellent pitching into the eighth inning, and then the bullpen came in and blew the lead. Duaner Sanchez hit a batter in the eighth and Scott Schoenweiss gave up a solo homer in the ninth. The bullpen is a complete disaster at this point.

The Mets end up taking two of three from the Padres and gain a game today on the Phillies to move to 2 games back of the NL East lead.

Box score

On Deck- August 7- Padres at Mets [Game 3]

San Diego Padres (44-70 Road: 19-36) at New York Mets (59-54 Home: 33-21) 12:10pm

J. Banks (3-4 3.65) vs. Johan Santana (9-7 2.86)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets need this one to take the series from the lowly Pads. Santana’s been pitching really well over the last three weeks and could use a win. Banks hasn’t lost a game since July 6th.

Padres at Mets- August 5-7 Series Preview

Tues. Aug. 5 7:10pm Chris Young (4-4 4.12) vs. Mike Pelfrey (9-7 3.91)

Wed. Aug. 6 7:10pm Cha Seung Baek (3-6 5.22) vs. Pedro Martinez (3-2 6.16)

Thurs. Aug. 7 12:10 pm Josh Banks (3-4 3.65) vs. Johan Santana (9-7 2.86)

What to watch: The Padres are in last place in the worst division in baseball. Only the Mariners and Nationals have worse records this season. The Padres swept the Mets in a four game series in San Diego during the first week of June. So the Mets owe them a beating. Anything less than a sweep will be a failure in my mind.

The Mets rotation is unaffected by John Maine’s injury for this series. So there are no excuses not to clobber a bad team like the Padres.

There’s been some talk about whether Trevor Hoffman should still be closing game for the Padres. He took the loss Friday night when he gave up a run in the 10th inning against the Giants. He’s converted 23 of 26 save opportunities this season but he’s 1-6 with a 4.59 ERA. Not very closer-like numbers.

Mets Lose To Astros 5-4 In 10 Innings

The bottom line of this game is that Johan Santana just needs to pitch a complete game every time out for the Mets to win. This was an incredibly frustrating loss for a multitude of reasons. But Santana was terrific. He went 6.1 innings giving up 3 hits and 1 run. What does he have to do to get a win?

The bullpen was  complete disaster tonight. And Billy Wagner threw some gas on the fire tonight too with his 7th blown save of the season. Scott Schoenweiss gave up a long solo homer to Kaz Matsui, Wagner gave up three sharp hits and two runs allowing the Astros to tie the game, Aaron Heilman gave up a leadoff walk in the 10th inning and a hit, and then Pedro Feliciano gave up a sacrifice fly to Darren Estad for the Astros to win it.

Daniel “Don’t call me Dan” Murphy got a hit in his first Major League at-bat, and made a tremendous jumping catch against the wall in left and threw to second base for a double play. Nice start for the rookie.

So the Mets fall to third place in the NL East on this loss as the Phillies and Marlins won tonight. The Mets have lost three straight and have lost the series in Houston. They’ll try to avoid the sweep tomorrow afternoon.

Box score

On Deck- August 2- Mets at Astros [Game 2]

New York Mets (58-51 Road: 26-31) at Houston Astros (51-57 Home: 27-26) 7:05pm

Johan Santana (9-7 2.93) vs. Roy Oswalt (8-8 4.67)

TV: SNY Radio: WFAN

What to watch: Santana went nine innings giving up one run in his last start against St. Louis and looked terrific. Oswalt got a win in his last start against the Reds but gave up four runs over five innings. The Mets really need to take both games left in this series to beat a team that they should be better than. It’s key over the next two months to take series’ from losing teams. A loss today would extend the Mets losing streak to three games.
