On Deck: June 23- Mariners At Mets

Seattle Mariners (26-49 Road: 11-25) at New York Mets (37-37 Home: 20-14)  7:10pm

Felix Hernandez (6-5 2.87) vs. Johan Santana (7-5 3.04)

TV: ESPN, SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: King Felix is one of the few bright spots on a horrible Mariners team. They’re probably more dysfunctional than the Mets, which is saying something. Theoretically, this should be a premiere pitching match up. It’ll be interesting to see if it works out that way. This is also Jerry Manuel’s first home game as Mets manager. I’ll be curious to see how he’s greeted by the crowd.

Mets Commit 3 Errors In Loss To Angels 6-1

Johan Santana didn’t have it tonight in Jerry Manuel’s first game as the Mets manager. Jose Reyes was hurt in the first inning and showed up Manuel when he was pulled from the game. The game felt like a resounding thud for the Mets.

There was virtually no offense in the game for the Mets against Jon Lackey. Damion Easley scored in the first inning on a double play ground out by David Wright. That was it for the Mets offense.

Santana pitched six innings giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits and two walks while striking out five. Aaron Heilman pitched a clean seventh inning and Claudio Vargas gave up one more run in the eighth.

The Mets were sloppy in the field with errors by Carlos Delgado, Marlon Anderson, and Luis Castillo.

What to watch: You might have forgotten that there’s a game tonight in all of the news today. The Mets ace, Johan Santana, has a tough match up tonight against Jon Lackey. It’s the first game of the Jerry Manuel regime and I’m anxious to see it. Join me in the Mets Report Game Chat room tonight for the game.

Juan Rincon Refuses Triple-A Assignment

The Minnesota Twins designated reliever Juan Rincon for assignment on Friday. They asked him to accept an assignment at Triple-A Rochester but he refused. The Twins now have 10 days to trade him or release him.

Rincon has a one year contract for $2.475 million. Last year and the beginning of this season have been pretty bad for him. Check out his career statistics (click to enlarge):

He’s pitched in a lot of games in his career and is only 29 years old. It would be worthwhile for Omar Minaya to get a scouting report on him from Johan Santana.

If Minaya is looking at making some deals before the non-waiver deadline this season, the bullpen is an area that they could use as bait. Aaron Heilman, Scott Schoenweiss, and Joe Smith could all have value in trades for more consistent offense at first base and the outfield.

Wagner Blows Third Straight Save; Mets Lose To D-Backs 5-4 in 10 Innings

Another great game by Johan Santana was wasted today. He went seven shutout innings giving up three hits and three walks with ten strikeouts. Joe Smith was terrible in the eighth inning giving up two walks and two hits in .2 innings. Two runs scored on him.

Billy Wagner blew the save in the ninth inning allowing two runs to score on two hits and two walks. Then Aaron Heilman threw gas on the fire in the tenth inning. Justin Upton doubled off him, moved to third on a sacrifice, then scored on a sacrifice fly.

The Mets offense came on a solo homer by Ramon Castro in the second inning off Dan Haren. David Wright doubled in Endy Chavez in the third inning but was thrown out going for third base. Fernando Tatis hit a two run single in the seventh inning.

The Mets lose the home series to the struggling D-Backs and have the Texas Rangers coming to town for a weekend series.
