The Mets add another player to the disabled list today in Fernando Nieve. He strained his right quad while running out a chopper in Atlanta last night.

Cory Sullivan will replace him on the roster for now. He was hitting .290 with 2 HR and 24 RBI in 286 AB at Triple-A Buffalo.

I would assume that Jon Niese will take Nieve’s spot in the rotation next time around. If not, it’ll be a major shock.

Game Preview: Braves at Mets [Game 33] May 13, 2009

braves-logo4Atlanta Braves (16-17 Road: 11-8) at New York Mets (18-14 Home: 12-7)  1:10 pm

Jo-Jo Reyes (0-2 5.48) vs. Jonathan Niese (0-0 3.00)

TV: SNY  RadioWFAN

What to watch:  The Mets and Braves play the rubber game of the series today before the Mets leave for San Francisco. I saw Reyes pitch for the Braves a few times last season and he didn’t look good at all. His stats appear to show that he isn’t having much more success this season either. Niese had a good game going 6 innings and giving up 2 runs in his season debut starting for Oliver Perez.

Game Preview: Pirates at Mets [Game 28] May 8, 2009

pirates-logoPittsburgh Pirates (12-16 Road: 5-9) at New York Mets (14-13 Home: 8-6)  7:10 pm

Jeff Karstens (1-1 5.85) vs. Jonathan Niese (0-0 0.00)

TV: SNY    RadioWFAN

What to watch:  The Pirates come to town losing 9 of their last 10 games. They had a good start but completely lost it, not unlike the Marlins. Karstens last two starts haven’t been very good and he hasn’t won a game since April 23. Niese hasn’t been great in the minors this season but makes his season debut in place of the “injured” Oliver Perez tonight. This one has the makings of a high scoring game, even in spacious Citi Field.

Cubs Clobber Mets Niese In 9-5 Win

The Mets lost their third straight game after starter Jon Niese got rocked for six runs over three plus innings. The ultimate embarrassment was giving up a grand slam to the opposing pitcher Jason Marquis. It was the second opposing pitcher to hit a grand slam off the Mets this season.

The shaky bullpen went on to give up three more runs over the final six innings.

The Mets had 11 hits on the night but it was all for naught again as the Mets continue another late season slide.

Carlos Beltran was shaken up when he hit the wall hard making a catch. He did stay in the game despite the nay-sayers that have called him “soft” for the past four seasons.

On Deck- September 22- Cubs at Mets [Game 1]

Chicago Cubs (94-60 Road: 39-34) at New York Mets (86-69 Home: 45-29)

Jason Marquis (10-9 4.39) vs. Jon Niese (1-0 4.09)

TV: SNY  Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets are desperate for wins as they start a four game series at home with the Cubs. Niese is coming off eight shutout innings in his last start against Atlanta. Marquis has been up and down for the Cubs this season. The Cubs have already clinched the NL Central so they’ll be playing not to get anybody hurt before the playoffs.

Rookie Niese Leads Mets Over Braves 5-0

Rookie starting pitcher Jon Niese threw eight shutout innings giving up six hits and two walks, along with seven strikeouts. He was clearly more comfortable than his last start against the Brewers. Niese even threw his season-high 116 pitches in the game.

The Mets used the long ball to get the win against the Braves in the nightcap. They had home runs from David Wright, Jose Reyes, and Carlos Beltran. Reyes, Beltran, and Fernando Tatis all three hits in the game as well.

The Mets increase their NL East lead tonight to 2.5 games.

On Deck- September 13- Braves at Mets [Games 1 and 2]

Atlanta Braves (64-82 Road: 24-48) at New York Mets (82-63 Home: 44-27)

Mike Hampton (2-2 5.60) vs. Johan Santana (13-7 2.70) 3:55pm

Jo-Jo Reyes (3-10 5.26) vs. Jon Niese (0-0 15.00)  approx. 7:30pm

TV: Fox; SNY  Radio: WFAN

What to watch: If the weather holds up today we’ll have an old fashioned double header. The Braves are just playing out the string now that they’re eliminated from post season play. The Mets are looking to keep the pressure on the Phillies by taking this home series from the down-trodden Braves.
