Preview: Mets at Pirates August 21, 2010

New York Mets (61-61) at Pittsburgh Pirates (40-82) 7:05 pm

Jon Niese (7-5 3.38) vs James McDonald (2-2 4.26)

TV: WPIX  Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets finally found some offense last night but it probably won’t be as easy tonight against McDonald. His last start was a really good one against the Marlins going 7 innings and only giving up 1 run on 3 hits. Niese has had three excellent starts in a row without getting a win. He’s only given up 3 runs in 21 innings over that span. Expect to see Chris Carter back in the cleanup spot tonight after having some success personally and as a team last night.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsOnce again, Jon Niese was great going 7 strong innings on a night when they really needed it without a closer. Niese allowed 7 hits, no walks, and had 5 strikeouts. The bullpen cleaned up the final two innings without K-Rod only allowing 1 hit and 1 walk.

The biggest surprise of the game is that the Mets actually had a little offense. More surprising is where the offense came from. Ice cold David Wright was 3 for 4 with a key run scored in the ninth on a wild pitch. Equally cold Carlos Beltran was 2 for 3 with a solo homer in the fourth and 2 runs scored. Even Jeff Francoeur got into the act pounding a triple off the left field wall in the ninth to drive in Beltran with an insurance run.

The Mets get off to a nice start in Houston with a win and face Nelson Figueroa tomorrow.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThis game was a real killer. Jon Niese pitched another great game going 7 strong innings allowing only 1 run. He was cruising and didn’t give up a run until a sac fly in the seventh. Niese had 7 strikeouts and no walks. It was an excellent game.

The Mets had no offense again with 3 hits and 1 walk. The only runs were on an Angel Pagan home run in the first inning. They only had 2 baserunners in the last 8 innings of the game. David Wright was 0 for 4 with 4 strikeouts and mostly against Jeff Francis a lefty.

The game was completely blown up with 2 outs in the eighth inning. Hisanori Takahashi gave up a hit and a walk. Then Manny Acosta gave up 3 hits and 2 walks without getting an out including a grand slam to Melvin Mora. It was beyond ugly.

The Mets and Rockies will play the rubber game of the series early tomorrow at noon.

Colorado Rockies (58-54) at New York Mets (56-56) 7:10 pm

Jeff Francis (4-4 4.67) vs Jon Niese (7-5 3.63)

TV: SNY  Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets have a chance to make things happen against Francis. He isn’t having a good season after missing all of last year to injury. For the most part, Niese has been so impressive this year. He only has 28 starts in his career but he looks like an experienced veteran out there. Also, expect Jeff Francoeur back in the lineup against the lefty Francis.

Phillies 7 – Mets 5 August 6, 2010

July 16, 2010 - San Francisco, CA, United States of America - 16 July 2010; San Francisco, CA: New York Mets Jonathon Niese.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets looked like they were in great shape to win this game in the eighth inning. Jon Niese had an outstanding start going 7 innings and only allowing 1 run. He was in complete control after the first inning when he got out of a bases loaded situation.

The bullpen gave it up in the eighth with Bobby Parnell and Pedro Feliciano getting rocked for 6 runs and blowing the game.

The Mets had some offense going with 10 hits but no walks. Jeff Franoeur is back on a hot streak going 3 for 4. And the Mets made a run at a come back in the ninth but it was too little too late. Mike Hessman hit a 3-run homer to make it closer than the game really was.

The Mets continue their incompetence on the road with another loss as the season goes down the drain before our eyes.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets were completely annihilated by the D-Backs in the rubber game of the series this afternoon. It’s a shame they put on such a poor show in front of a good crowd there for the Mets Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

Jon Niese started the game well then got crushed for 3 runs in the fourth inning and 4 more in the fifth. He wasn’t helped out by the sloppy defense either. The Mets had 2 errors in the game but there were plenty of careless plays that made the Mets look like they were sleepwalking through this one.

The Mets only had 5 hits and 1 walk as a team. So there weren’t any standouts on offense to write about.

Oliver Perez did mop up the final two innings allowing 4 more runs to score. He heard some pretty hearty boo’s when he entered the game in the eighth inning.

The Mets are off to Atlanta then Philly this week.

Arizona D-Backs (38-66) at New York Mets (53-51) 1:10pm

Daniel Hudson (1-1 6.32) vs Jon Niese (7-4 3.43)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets and D-Backs play the rubber game of the series after the Mets took a thriller in the bottom of the ninth last night. Today is also the Mets Hall of Fame induction ceremony. It’s a great game to have a ticket for. Hudson was roughed up badly in two of his three starts this season. This is only his sixth career big league start. Niese had another fantastic game against the Cardinals in his last start allowing only 1 run over 6 innings.
