Mets Non-Tender Maine, Green, Carter

NEW YORK - MAY 09: John Maine #33 of the New ...

The Mets finally cut John Maine loose. They did it a year too late but as long as they got it done, that’s what counts. It’s been a downhill slide for Maine since his breakout 2007 season with 15 wins. Injuries and difficulty coping with them took its toll on Maine leading to him coming off surgery (again) but this time without a contract. I’m sure some team will offer him a minor league deal to see if he can recover but I doubt that it will be the Mets.

Here are Maine’s career stats through 2010:

The Mets also chose to non-tender Sean Green and Chris Carter. Green only made it into 11 games last year after having cracked ribs. He claimed the injury was because the Mets were trying to convert him to a submarine style from his usual sidearm delivery. Who knows if that’s really the case? But it just didn’t make sense to bring him back. Relievers are so up and down from year to year.

Carter was such a likable player in 2010 for the Mets. He’s the kind of guy that everyone roots for, including me. He was the super Joe McEwing of 2010. It’s too bad he didn’t have the talent to stick on the roster. Carter was an absolute butcher in the field. I could see him getting a shot with an American League team as a designated hitter. I hope it works out for him. I’d be thrilled to see him back in the big leagues and playing successfully at some point.

Preview: Mets at Pirates August 22, 2010

New York Mets (62-61) at Pittsburgh Pirates (40-83) 1:35 pm

Johan Santana (10-7 2.97) vs Zach Duke (5-12 5.32)

TV: SNY  Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets actually have a chance to sweep a road series against an NL team today. Hey, it is the Pirates though. Santana went 8 innings in his last start in Houston but took the loss after giving up 4 runs. Duke has been getting knocked around recently and the Pirates lost the last four games he started. It’ll be interesting to see if the Mets go with Chris Carter in right field again against a lefty. The lineup has been scoring runs but doing it against righties.

Mets 5 – Pirates 1 August 21, 2010

July 19, 2010 - Phoenix, AZ, United States - epa02254193 New York Mets David Wright watches his fifth inning double down the right field line, during their Major League Baseball game against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, 19 July, 2010.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe game was originally delayed by rain in Pittsburgh and later called in the sixth inning with the Mets getting a win. It’s the Mets first road series win against a National League team all season. Jon Niese pitched really well again and got a complete game win going 5 innings and only allowing 1 run on 5 hits.

The Mets scored a run in the first on a strange play when Chris Carter struck out, the ball got away from the catcher, and Jose Reyes was at third and took home on the throw to first. Reyes slid into home head first and looked like he might have been injured on the play. But he stayed in the game. David Wright hit a long homer to center in the fifth, a 3-run shot, that put the Mets way ahead and sealed the win.

New York Mets (61-61) at Pittsburgh Pirates (40-82) 7:05 pm

Jon Niese (7-5 3.38) vs James McDonald (2-2 4.26)

TV: WPIX  Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets finally found some offense last night but it probably won’t be as easy tonight against McDonald. His last start was a really good one against the Marlins going 7 innings and only giving up 1 run on 3 hits. Niese has had three excellent starts in a row without getting a win. He’s only given up 3 runs in 21 innings over that span. Expect to see Chris Carter back in the cleanup spot tonight after having some success personally and as a team last night.

Video: Mets’ Chris Carter on Big Night in Pittsburgh

July 22, 2010 Los Angeles, CA..New York Mets Chris Carter at bat in action during the Major League Baseball game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium July 22, 2010 in Los Angeles, California..The Dodgers defeat the Mets 2-0.Louis Lopez/CSM.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsIt was good to the see “The Animal” Chris Carter have a big night last night in Pittsburgh hitting in the cleanup spot. He was 2 for 4 with a home run and 2 RBI’s. He reminds me a lot of “Super” Joe McEwing. They’re those guys that you don’t necessarily want to see in the lineup everyday, but when they play they make things happen. And they’re easy to like and root for.

I’ll be shocked if Carter isn’t batting cleanup again tonight after the Mets 7 run outburst last night. Jerry Manuel might have finally found the right mix to score some runs. Too bad it took 122 games into the season to find it.

Here’s some post-game video from Carter last night in Pittsburgh:

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets had an offensive explosion in support of Mike Pelfrey. It’s hard to remember the last time the Mets put up 7 runs in a game. Pelfrey had a pretty good game going 8 innings and giving up only 1 earned run. He started very strong and then struggled a bit in the middle innings before finishing strong.

I was completely shocked that the Mets had 15 hits and 1 walk. Oddly, this kind of game came with Chris Carter hitting cleanup. Carter came through going 2 for 4 with a home run and 2 RBI’s. Jose Reyes and David Wright had 3 hits apiece. With 15 hits just about everyone got in on the action.

It’s a nice way to start a series for two teams that are out of the race.

Phillies 6 – Mets 5 August 8, 2010

July 25, 2010 - Los Angeles, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES - epa02261051 New York Mets' R.A. Dickey pitches during first inning of a Major League baseball game against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Los Angeles, California, USA, 25 July 2010.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe glory days for R.A. Dickey came crashing down today as he only lasted 3 innings and gave up 6 runs (4 earned). The Phillies put up 5 runs in the third, mostly on a 3-run shot by Raul Ibanez. Dickey just didn’t seem to have it from the get-go the Phillies were really patient today taking a lot of his pitches.

The Mets had some offense going with 10 hits and 1 walk in the game. They got to Roy Halladay, which doesn’t happen very often. But it was just too little to recover from the damage done to Dickey earlier in the game. The Mets put up 2 runs in the first and looked like they were going to run rough-shot over the Phils today. Josh Thole went 3 for 4 and Angel Pagan was all over the place going 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s and 2 SB’s. Chris Carter had a great pinch hit RBI double to the wall in center field that just missed going out and tying the game.

The Mets drop another series and head home to play the Rockies on Tuesday.
