Report: Mets Will Field Offers for David Wright

ESPN’s Buster Olney writes today that he expects the Mets to listen to offers for David Wright in the offseason. It’s the perfect time contractually to trade Wright because he only has one year left on his contract plus a team option for 2013 that is eliminated if he’s traded. Next season he’ll make $15 million and the 2013 option is for $16 million with a $1 million buyout.

Olney expects the Rockies and Angels to be in on the bidding for Wright. I’m sure there would plenty of other teams that would contact Sandy Alderson if they knew that Wright was available. His contract is very much aligned with his on-field value and with only one year left, there’s almost no down side for a team to acquire him. If the first year doesn’t work out let him to free agency for, presumably, Type A compensation.

The problem for the Mets is that if they trade Wright, they need to re-sign Jose Reyes or the team will be in danger of completely cratering for seasons to come. If the Mets trade Wright and don’t re-sign Reyes, it will clearly be a salary dump move to help alleviate the Madoff situation. And that won’t sit well with fans like me.

Timing could be an issue as well. Free agency starts five days after the World Series ends and Reyes will be one of the most valuable players in free agency. He may sign a new contract quickly, which wouldn’t give Alderson much time to work out a trade for Wright.  That could be the most difficult aspect of this.

Jose Reyes to Rehab with Binghamton Mets

Jose Reyes has been on the Mets’ disabled list since August 8th with a hamstring strain. He’s going to start playing in rehab games tonight for the Binghamton Mets. If you’re in the Binghamton area it’s a great chance to see Reyes playing shortstop in a small stadium setting. I would guess that he’ll be playing the double-play combination with Reese Havens at second base. If the Mets are able to re-sign Reyes in the offseason, maybe we’ll see that combo at Citi Field next season.

Here’s a promotional video that the B-Mets put together for this rehab stint. Reyes will likely play a few (maybe three) games for Binghamton before returning from the disabled list.

Jose Reyes may Not Return from Injury on Tuesday

Impending free agent Jose Reyes has been on the disabled list since August 8th. It’s his second trip to the disabled list this season with a hamstring injury. He’s still leading the National League in hitting with a .336 average and second in the league in stolen bases to Michael Bourn with 34.

It’s been an incredible season for Reyes except for the injuries. I’m sure every player dreams of having the season of a lifetime in their contract year. And Reyes has been doing that. The only potential problem for his free agency are the injuries. He’s had a fairly lengthy list of injuries during the beginning of his career with the Mets and that may keep him from the big money as Fred Wilpon told the New Yorker earlier this season.

I didn’t think that this latest hamstring injury would be a problem for Reyes unless he wasn’t ready to come off the disabled list after 15 days when he’s eligible. That day is Tuesday and it’s starting to look like Reyes might not be back with the team in Philadelphia.

Reyes told reporters yesterday when asked about playing on Tuesday:

I don’t know about that. I need to run the bases first before I decide when I’m going to play. I’ve been running the past three days, and I feel very good. I’m not running 100 percent yet, but it’s getting there.

That’s a problem. Reyes needs to show other teams that may offer him a contract in the offseason that his injury is very minor. He needs to do that by being in the starting lineup on Tuesday. If not, I think every day that he doesn’t play is going to cost him in free agency. Staying on the DL this late in the season, with his injury history, has to lead other teams to question his health in a long-term contract.

Reyes, Murphy Injured in Mets 6-5 Loss To Braves

As if it wasn’t bad enough that Bobby Parnell blew the game in the ninth, there are major injuries to talk about. Jose Reyes left the game in the second inning with a mild hamstring strain. Unfortunately, the last time this happened he was out of action for three weeks. Maybe the recurring injuries will keep his contract down in the offseason.

Daniel Murphy was injured more severely in the seventh inning when he took a spike from Jose Constanza in the lower leg at second base. Murphy had just come into the game as a pinch hitter in the inning. The Mets have already put Murphy on the disabled list and called up Ruben Tejada to replace him.

If Reyes goes on the disabled list too, it’s going to be a severe hit to an already under-manned team. The faint glimmer of hope for a late season miracle will be completely out the window with Reyes and Murphy out for any lengthy period of time.

Terry Collins said after the game that Murphy indicated when he was coming off the field that the injury was pretty serious. He was telling them “Get me off the field” as they helped him off.

The Mets went into the ninth inning leading 3-2 and lost the game on a Justin Turner throwing error for their fourth straight loss. The SNY crew is doing their best to pretend that these games have some meaning in the wild card race but we know better watching the Mets lose game after game.

Chris Capuano had a very solid start going 6 innings and allowing 2 runs. He would have gotten his tenth win if Turner hadn’t thrown the game away. It didn’t help that Jason Isringhausen gave up 2 hits and a walk in the ninth. He thew gas on the fire for the second straight night and showed why he hasn’t been closing games for three years.

On offense the Mets had 9 hits and 2 walks. Jose Reyes hit a shot of a homer to left in the third inning and went 1 for 4 lowering his season average to .339. Scott Hairston got the start in right field and went 2 for 4.

The Mets will try to avoid the home sweep tomorrow night before an off day on Thursday.

The Mets got another fair start from Chris Capuano. He was cruising until the sixth inning when he gave up 4 runs including the first of Gaby Sanchez’ two home runs. D.J. Carrasco and Ryota Igarashi didn’t do much better either. Carrasco gave up 3 more runs in the seventh inning and Igarashi gave up another run in the eighth.

Jose Reyes and Justin Turner had 3 hits apiece in the game. And Carlos Beltran had 3 walks as teams continue to pitch around him and go after the rest of the weak lineup behind him. Lucas Duda finally hit his first homer of the year in the ninth inning, as he and Reyes went back-to-back. But it wasn’t enough to come back from the bullpen’s implosion.

The Mets and Marlins will play the rubber game of the series tomorrow afternoon before the Mets leave for Cincinnati.

The Mets tonight start a 10-game road trip after a disappointing loss against the Cardinals.  One thing that is different about tonight, the team is getting David Wright back.  With the Mets all-star third baseman in the lineup, he came through in a big spot late for the Mets.

Mike Pelfrey had yet another inconsistent outing.  Pelfrey went 6 innings, gave up 4 ER’s on 5 hits, and had 3 K’s.  Pelfrey had the lead in the 6th until Gaby Sanchez hit a solo HR to tie the game at 4 apiece.   Jose Reyes continues to hit, as he got two hits tonight.  That adds to his multi-hit games total this year.  He now has 45.  That is very impressive!   In his return from the DL, David Wright went 2-4 with 2 RBI double’s. The Mets also got RBI hits from Carlos Beltran, Angel Pagan, Ronny Paulino, and Daniel Murphy.   Murphy also give the Mets the go-ahead run as he hit an RBI double to bring Wright home.

The Mets continue their 3-game series against the Marlins tommorrow night as the Mets send Chris Capuano (8-9, 4.16 ERA) to the hill against Clay Hensley (1-2, 2.12 ERA).  Game time is 7:10 EST.
