Ike Davis Is Hitting Again In Las Vegas

Las Vegas 51’s first baseman Ike Davis hit two home runs last night for the second straight game. After two-plus months of misery at the plate with the Mets, it looks like Ike might have his swing back. He’s had 39 at-bat’s in Vegas and is hitting .333/.480/.744 with a 1.224 OPS. He has 4 home runs and 8 RBI’s in 11 games.

The Pacific Coast League is a notorious hitters league. But for anyone worried that Ike had lost the ability to play baseball (a la Jason Bay), that doesn’t appear to be the case.

Lucas Duda has filled in admirably at first base since Daniel Murphy moved back to second base. I think it’s safe to say that most Mets fan feel that Davis has a much higher upside than Duda as a Major League player.

Expect to see Ike back with the Mets pretty quickly. He’s making over $3 million this year and that’s far too much salary for a minor league player. He’s getting paid to play for the Mets, not the 51’s.

Mets 2012 Uniform Changes

The Mets are following on the heels of the new Miami Marlins’ uniforms with some changes of their own to the uniform. ESPN is reporting that the Mets will hold a press conference on Tuesday to display the changes. The word is that the Mets are going retro for their 50th anniversary in 2012 and that they’re going to reduce the black used.

I won’t complain about either change. The Mets have had problems embracing their past, most notably when Citi Field opened and the Mets forgot to include any team memorabilia or images in the park. So switching to a retro look of pinstripe with “Mets” on the front and no black shadows is fine with me. Also, reducing the use of the black alternate uniforms is a solid choice at this point. They’ve over-utilized the black uniform to the point that I forgot that it was the alternate it was used so often.

Brian Erni from MetsBlogalso reports that David Wright, Ike Davis, and Lucas Duda will be at the press conference. Presumably, they’ll be there to model the retro look uniforms. It’s interesting that Wright will be continuing to do everything the Mets ask of him despite the trade talk that’s been in the news this offseason. It would certainly be awkward if the was traded in the near future after attending a press conference on behalf of the team.

Mets 8 – Reds 2 July 27, 2011

The Mets put a third straight beat down on the Reds after the announcement that Carlos Beltran was traded. Honestly, I was expecting a let down tonight but the Reds poor fielding and a big game from Mike Pelfrey kept that from happening. Pelf got a complete game and didn’t walk anyone. He looked smooth and in control throughout the game. It’s amazing that he can’t replicate that type of performance more frequently.

The Mets also got a huge game from David Wright going 2 for 4 with a HR and 4 RBI’s . Daniel Murphy also went 4 for 5 and Lucas Duda hit his second home run.

The Mets have the chance tomorrow for the rare four game road sweep in Cincy before leaving for Washington.

The Mets got another fair start from Chris Capuano. He was cruising until the sixth inning when he gave up 4 runs including the first of Gaby Sanchez’ two home runs. D.J. Carrasco and Ryota Igarashi didn’t do much better either. Carrasco gave up 3 more runs in the seventh inning and Igarashi gave up another run in the eighth.

Jose Reyes and Justin Turner had 3 hits apiece in the game. And Carlos Beltran had 3 walks as teams continue to pitch around him and go after the rest of the weak lineup behind him. Lucas Duda finally hit his first homer of the year in the ninth inning, as he and Reyes went back-to-back. But it wasn’t enough to come back from the bullpen’s implosion.

The Mets and Marlins will play the rubber game of the series tomorrow afternoon before the Mets leave for Cincinnati.

The Mets put a beat down on the Rangers today right from the start. They put up 3 runs in the first inning and never let up. Jon Niese was pitching really well going 5.2 innings and allowing only 2 runs when he was removed for a rapid heartbeat. I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about his condition in the next day.

On offense, everyone was killing today. They had 17 hits and 2 walks in the game. The amazing thing is that they scored 14 runs without a home run in a hitter’s park. Lucas Duda was the star going 4 for 5 with 4 RBI’s with 3 doubles.

The Mets and Rangers play the rubber game of the series tomorrow. The Mets can get to .500 with a win tomorrow too.

Nationals 7 – Mets 3 April 10, 2011

The Nationals took the series today at Citi Field with a win in 11 innings. Chris Young had an excellent start going 7 IP and only allowing 1 run. The Mets offense only managed 8 hits in the game and struck out 17 times including 4 by Willie Harris alone.

Blaine Boyer blew another game in the 11th inning today raising his ERA to 10.80. That earned him a quick trip to the waiver wire being DFA’d after the game. Ryota Igarashi and Jason Isringhausen were called up and will be with the team tomorrow.

Lucas Duda, hitting .118, blew a fly ball in the 11th inning and he earned a one-way ticket to Triple-A Buffalo.

Overall, it’s a poor start to lose a home series to the Nats. That shouldn’t happen. But the Rockies come to town tomorrow and it doesn’t get any easier because they’re playing well so far this season.

Preview: Mets at Marlins April 2, 2011

What to watch: The Mets try to recover from getting shut down by Josh Johnson last night. They’re playing behind Niese, who was 1-4 with a 6.49 ERA against the Marlins last year in 5 games. Nolasco went 2-0 against the Mets last season with a 3.96 ERA in 4 games.

We’ll get out first look at Lucas Duda this season in left field. Although Willie Harris played well last night, Duda should get the bulk of the playing time while Jason Bay is on the disabled list.
