Yankees 4 – Mets 2 June 28, 2009

A lot happened during the coarse of this game that could get your blood boiling as a Mets fan. The Yankees completed the sweep of the Mets at Citi Field. But honestly, the game was over in the first inning. The Yankees were putting up runs on Livan Hernandez before he even got an out. As usual, Hernandez’ total effort wasn’t bad as he gave up only 3 runs in 7 innings. But those runs were enough to lose the game.

Probably the worst moment of the game was in the ninth inning. Francisco Rodriguez was pitching in a non-save situation for some reason. I still can’t figure out why. He walks the bases after a questionable decision to pitch to Derek Jeter with a base open and Mariano Rivera on deck going for a four out save. After running a 2-1 count on Jeter, Jerry Manuel realizes that he should walk Jeter and go after Rivera for the third out. Of course, Rodriguez walks Rivera to plate a run! It was an embarrassing, ugly moment as a Mets fan.

As usual, there isn’t much Mets offense to talk about. They were 2 for 10 as a team with runners in scoring position. With this lineup they’re running out there now, they need to do a lot better than 2 for 10 with RISP. The only player of note was Gary Sheffield going 2 for 3 and raising his season average to .280.

And by the way, Rivera got the 500th save of his career.

Game Preview: Yankees at Mets [Game 74] June 28, 2009

Yankees LogoNew York Yankees (42-32 Road: 21-18) at New York Mets (37-36 Home: 22-16)   8:05 pm

Chien-Ming Wang (0-6 11.20) vs. Livan Hernandez (5-2 4.05)

TV: ESPN  Radio:  WFAN

What to watch: The Mets try to avoid the home sweep tonight on national TV. Wang has been awful this season with the Yankees losing eight of the ten games that he started. Hernandez has been much better than expected, but I keep waiting for him to return to the form that got him released last season by Minnesota.

Cardinals 3 – Mets 0 June 23, 2009

The Mets were victimized by a 2-hit shutout thrown by Joel Piniero. His sinker was working against the Mets anemic offense. Although Livan Hernandez pitched very well again, it wasn’t enough to match Piniero. Hernandez went 7 innings giving up 3 runs, 2 earned, after another Daniel Murphy error at first base. Elmer Dessens worked the final two innings without giving up a hit which is a good sign with the Mets overworked bullpen needing some help.

Orioles 5 – Mets 4 June 18, 2009

The Mets looked like they had this one wrapped up with a 4-3 lead going into the ninth and Francisco Rodriguez coming into the game. But K-Rod blew his second save and this one was completely on him. He looked really bad loading the bases and walking in a run before giving up another game winning hit to Aubrey Huff.

Livan Hernandez had another very solid start going 7 innings and giving up 2 runs. As usual, he gave up 8 hits and 1 walk but did a good job of limiting the damage.

The Mets offense was paced by Carlos Beltran, Alex Cora, and Luis Castillo with 2 hits apiece. Again, the Mets had no home runs and only one double by Daniel Murphy. Not much power in this lineup.

The Orioles take two of three games from the Mets as they come home to face the Rays.

orioles-logoNew York Mets (33-30 Road: 15-19)  at Baltimore Orioles (28-37 Home: 20-17) 7:05 pm

Livan Hernandez (5-1 4.33) vs. Jason Berken (1-3 7.32)

TV: SNY  Radio:  WFAN

What to watch: The Mets and Orioles play the rubber game of the series before the team comes home to face the reigning American League champion Rays. The weather forecast is good for Baltimore tonight so there won’t be a problem getting the game in. Hernandez was rocked by the Yankees in his last start for 6 runs in 5.1 innings. But he’s been up and down so it’s difficult to know what to expect. There hasn’t been a lot of consistency. Berken is a rookie right-hander making his fifth career start. His first two starts were pretty good but he’s gotten beat up in his last two starts. The Orioles have lost 3 of the 4 games that he’s started.

Game Preview: Mets at Yankees [Game 59] June 12, 2009

Yankees LogoNew York Mets (31-27 Road: 13-16)  at New York Yankees (34-26 Home: 18-11) 7:05 pm

Livan Hernandez (5-1 3.88) vs. Joba Chamberlain (3-1 3.79)

TV: SNY, YES  Radio:  WFAN

What to watch: The Yankees just got swept in Boston but they’ve won 5 of Chamberlain’s last 6 starts. He’s been pitching very well. Speaking of pitching well, Hernandez has been doing an incredibly good job for the Mets much to my surprise. He’s gone at least 7 innings in 3 of his last 4 starts. Both teams have been scuffling along this season but the Mets are so injury depleted that it’s hard to see them taking this series in the Bronx.

Game Preview: Mets at Nationals [Game 55] June 7, 2009

washington-nationals-logo2New York Mets (29-25 Road: 12-16) at Washington Nationals (15-39 Home: 9-19) 1:35 pm

Livan Hernandez (4-1 4.33) vs. Craig Stammen (0-1 5.71)

TV: SNY  Radio:  WFAN

What to watch: The Mets and Nationals play the rubber game of the series this afternoon. Hernandez has been better than I thought he would be, he hasn’t lost a game since April 23, But the Mets have lost 2 of the last 3 games that he’s started. Stammen is another one of the good looking young pitchers that the Nats are running out there. The Nats have won 2 of his 3 last starts. Expect to see Ryan Church in the lineup today back from the disabled list.
