Game Preview: Dodgers at Mets [Game 83] July 8, 2009

Hiroki Kuroda (3-4 3.91) vs. Oliver Perez (1-2 9.97)

TV: SNY, ESPN  Radio:  WFAN

What to watch: The Mets try to avoid their fifth consecutive loss tonight. Perez is back from the DL/poor performance. He pitched okay in the minors in his rehab games. But who knows what to expect from him, really? The Dodgers are 4-4 in Kuroda’s start this year. He’s only pitched more than 6 innings twice in eight starts. Expect to be into the Dodgers bullpen during this one if the Mets can generate any offense for a change.

Dodgers 8 – Mets 0 July 7, 2009

The Mets lost their fourth consecutive game and were shutout for the second consecutive game. The team hasn’t been this low and lifeless in quite some time. Mike Pelfrey was terrible after having an excellent start in Milwaukee last week. He gave up 5 runs (4 earned) in 3+ innings and that killed the Mets. It took him 95 pitches to get through 3 innings. Talk about struggling on the mound! In all, the Mets gave up 13 hits and 7 walks to the Dodgers. The Dodgers had 5 two-out RBI’s in the game.

The Mets have absolutely nothing going on offense right now. They only had 4 hits and 2 walks.

The only interesting part of the game was Manny Ramirez going 2 for 4 with 3 RBI’s and getting thrown out of the game. He got a called third strike, for the second time, and threw his elbow pad in the air in the direction of the umpire. That’ll do it.

Clayton Kershaw (5-5 3.49) vs. Mike Pelfrey (6-3 4.26)

TV: SNY  Radio:  WFAN

What to watch: The Mets are licking their wounds after taking a beating in Philly over the weekend. Of course, the Dodgers and the best record in MLB come to town to start a three game series. The Dodgers have won the last four games the Kershaw started. Pelfrey pitched a great game, his best start of the season, in his last game in Milwaukee. He’ll need to keep that going if the depleted Mets expect to beat the Dodgers tonight. It’ll be interesting to see how the Citi Field crowd greets Manny Ramirez. Don’t be too hard on him if you’re at the game, he might get into a steroid rage.

Dodgers 2 – Mets 1 May 20, 2009

The Dodgers completed the sweep of the Mets tonight and sent New York to their fourth straight loss. You never would’ve thought the game would be 1-1 in the eighth inning of a game that Livan Hernandez and Jeff Weaver started. I thought it would’ve been 8-6 or something like that.

Hernandez pitched really well going 7 innings and giving up 1 run on 93 pitches. I’m shocked that I’m writing that because he appears to be pitching batting practice out there. It’s hard to understand how he doesn’t get shelled in every start. The problem came in the eighth inning with J.J. Putz… again. He gave up 2 walks and 2 hits including 1 run. That was the game.

Once again, the Mets had basically no offense. Carlos Beltran was 2 for 3 with a double but the Mets only had 7 hits in the game.

For those of you that couldn’t stay up to watch the game Daniel Murphy was fantastic at first base. He made all the plays including an unassisted double play. Clearly, he can pick it at first. If they’re trying to find a way to get his bat into the lineup… Consider that problem solved. He had to feel great about that after looking like such a bafoon in the outfield all season.

Jose Reyes left the game after his second at-bat. He was running out a ground out and his right leg injury was aggrevated. He limped off the field and immediately came out of the game. Ramon Martinez played the rest of the game at short. It looks like this injury is more serious than they originally thought.

What to watch: The Mets try to avoid a sweep in their last game on the west coast before a day off then a series in Boston. Hernandez wasn’t very good in his last start against the Giants giving up 5 runs in 5 innings. He’ll need to do better than that against the Dodgers. Weaver has been working out of the bullpen and making a few starts this season. This is the type of pitcher that the Mets really need to jump on early.
