Report: Mets And Lowe In Talks

This story from Yahoo writer Gordon Eades really got a lot of press yesterday. Eades reports that the Mets and Derek Lowe’s agent are in “deep negotiations” for Lowe to come to New York.

It’s the typical story without substance that happens this time of year. Ken Rosenthal and Jon Heyman have mastered the art of reporting rumors. It sounds like Eades is trying to make a splash by using the language “deep negotiations” in the story.

I’m sure that Omar Minaya has kicked the tires on Lowe. But I suspect that Lowe will end up back in Boston. Now that the Yankees have landed Mark Teixeira, Boston will need to start collecting some big-time players. Lowe is the best pitcher left on the market, so Boston should go hard after him.

Mets fans, don’t get your hopes up about Lowe coming to Queens. I suspect he’ll be back in Boston again next season.

Teixeira Traded- See You Next Year Braves

The Atlanta Braves officially threw in the towel yesterday and traded first baseman Mark Teixeira to the Los Angeles Angels. In return, the Braves come away with first baseman Casey Kotchman and minor league pitcher Stephen Marek. Marek is not considered to be one of the Angels top pitching prospects.

With Tim Hudson on the disabled list, possibly for the rest of the season, and Chipper Jones currently on the DL this trade makes sense for the Braves. Their  season is over. The problem here is for the Braves fans that are season ticket holders. They’re the ones that are now stuck paying for nothing. For their fans it’ll be hard to stay motivated to keep watching a team that’s already given up this season. Whether it’s buying tickets for games or watching on TV, there’s almost no point for their fans. That’s a tough situation.

The National League East is now down to the Mets, Marlins, and Phillies.

Braves Sweep Mets With 3-1 Win

Atlanta- Despite a solid performance by Johan Santana, the Mets lose 3-1 to the Braves in Atlanta today. John Smoltz pitched very well giving up only two hits and two walks in five innings. Santana was almost as good only giving up one run over seven innings.The Mets offense was stifled by Braves pitching with Santana having the Mets only extra base hit, a double. The Mets had only five hits in the game.

Aaron Heilman was the goat of this game, walking Chipper Jones in the eighth and Mark Teixeira hit a two-run homer to right field.

The Mets made a comeback attempt in the ninth inning but it was too little too late. Teixeira snagged a shot by Brian Schneider down the first base line to end the game. See the box score here.

Yesterday the Mets pitching let them down and today the offense couldn’t generate anything against the Braves pitching. The Mets have the day off tomorrow and return to New York for the home opener on Tuesday at Shea Stadium.
