Pre-Game: Mets at Pirates [Game 52] June 4, 2009

New York Mets (28-23 Road: 11-14) at Pittsburgh Pirates (24-28 Home: 14-11) 12:35 pm

Mike Pelfrey (4-1 3.88) vs. Ross Ohlendorf (5-5 4.45)

TV: SNY  Radio:  WFAN

What to watch: The Mets try to salvage something out of this rain-shortened series in Pittsburgh behind Pelfrey. He’s pitched five good starts in a row and should be able to keep it going against a weak Pirates lineup. Their lineup is even weaker after trading OF Nate McClouth to the Braves yesterday. Ohlendorf has lost his last two starts and given up at least four runs in his last three starts. The word is that Carlos Beltran is finally ready to play.

WFAN radio is reporting that the Mets-Pirates game tonight is rained out in Pittsburgh. The teams are scheduled to play tomorrow at 12:35pm so it would make sense to play a double header tomorrow.

The injured Mets could really use an extra day off though right now. So they’re probably trying to work out a date when they can get back to Pittsburgh for a game later this season. So Mike Pelfrey will be moved back to tomorrow’s game as things stand right now.

Mets 3 – Red Sox 2 May 23, 2009

The Mets pulled out a dramatic win in the ninth inning capped by a 2-run homer by Omir Santos off Jonathan Papelbon for the win. The home run was reviewed on video by the umpires. It just barely made it over the line at the top of the Green Monster, but it was a home run.

Mike Pelfrey went toe-to-toe with Josh Beckett for 7 innings giving up only 2 runs on 6 hits and 1 walk. He looked very good all night, both runs for the Sox were scored in the first inning and Pelfrey shut them out for the next six.

J.J. Putz closed the game because Francisco Rodriguez suffered serious back spasms before the game. He was taken to the hospital in Boston for an examination.

It was a great win in several respects for the Mets. Not the least important is that it was just a dramatic win of a great game in itself. But it also was the fifth win for the Mets on this ten game road trip, which solidifies this as a successful trip. If you can go on the road (and the west coast) and not lose any ground in the standings then you’re doing pretty well.

What to watch: Pelfrey’s last start was very forgettable with what he described as “the yips”. Whatever the yips are caused Pelfrey to balk three times on his way to a loss in San Francisco. Beckett has generally pitched pretty well this season. He got bombed in a couple of starts that threw his ERA out of whack but he can be very tough when he’s on.

Giants 2 – Mets 0 May 17, 2009

This was a strange game mostly due to Mike Pelfrey inexplicably balking three times. And Bob Davidson wasn’t even in the park. Go figure. Both balks led to the 2 San Francisco runs. Pelfrey also gave up an RBI single to Matt Cain. That’s a recipe for a bad night.

The Mets offense was pretty much non-existant other than the 7 walks that Cain gave them. They only had 5 hits in the game and left 9 runners on base. Alex Cora left the game after injuring his thumb on a head first slide into second base. Fernando Tatis took over as Jose Reyes missed his fourth straight game with possible tendinitis in his knee.

The Mets did get the bases loaded twice but hit into double plays both times to kill the rally.

The Mets end up taking 3 of 4 from the Giants which is great for the start of a west coast road trip. It would’ve been nice to get the sweep but it’s a good start anyway. The Mets will be in Los Angeles tomorrow night for the start of a three game series.

What to watch: The Mets are trying to complete the 4-game sweep in San Francisco tonight behind Pelfrey. The Mets offense has been red hot this week. Pelfrey has put together a string of four good starts in a row after some early season struggles. Cain has been up and down this season but hasn’t let any teams really get away from him during his starts.
