Mets 4 – Braves 3 May 12, 2009

What a game! The Mets come back to score 2 in the eighth and 1 in the ninth to tie it, then win it in the tenth inning. Great game. This Mets team hasn’t done much late scoring this season so that was great to see. Carlos Beltran walked with the bases loaded and two outs, on a full count, to force in a run and win the game.

Mike Pelfrey was good tonight going 7 innings and giving up 2 runs. Curiously, Jerry Manuel pulled him from the game after throwing only 96 pitches. I thought that he could’ve pitched the eighth. J.J. Putz was shaky again, giving up a run in the eighth inning to raise his season ERA to 3.79 which is way too high for him. Francisco Rodriguez pitched 2 innings giving up a couple of hits and a walk but managed to get himself out of trouble.

A good sign is that the Mets only left 7 runners on base. They’ve been in double digits seemingly every game.

The rubber game of the series is tomorrow afternoon before a west coast trip starts.

Game Preview: Braves at Mets [Game 32] May 12, 2009

braves-logoAtlanta Braves (16-16 Road: 11-7) at New York Mets (17-14 Home: 11-7)  7:10 pm

Jair Jurrjens (3-2 2.01) vs. Mike Pelfrey (4-0 5.46)

TV: SNY  RadioWFAN

What to watch:  The Mets really need to take the next two games of this series before heading to the west coast for a 10 game road trip. Jurrjens has been outstanding this season for the Braves, as good as they could have hoped for his development. Pelfrey has been pitching okay but curiously only has one strikeout in his last three starts.

Mets 7- Phillies 5 May 7, 2009

The Mets got another 2-game series sweep for their fourth win in a row. Most of this win was thanks to Jamie Moyer would had nothing tonight. He gave up 2-run homers to Carlos Beltran and David Wright in the first inning and 7 runs in his 2.1 innings of work.

Mike Pelfrey had a pretty good game tonight getting through 7 innings and giving up 3 runs. Oddly, he didn’t have any strikeouts for the second consecutive start.

Jerry Manuel was thrown out of the game after arguing a call made on a run-down play. Shane Victorino was in a run-down and stuck out his arm to get contact with Jose Reyes. The first base umpire called obstruction and awarded Victorino second base. It was bad call. Manuel might get a suspension though as he bumped hats with the umpire. That contact could get him a game or two suspension.

A very good sign tonight was that Wright 3 for 3 with 2 runs and 2 RBI’s and a walk. His home run was a straight away bomb to center field that landed right next to the apple. Hopefully, he can start something with the bat. He looked better tonight hitting than I’ve seen him in quite a while.

What to watch:  The Mets go for the 2-game series sweep tonight at Citi Field. Moyer’s last start wasn’t very good but the Phillies beat the Mets on May 2nd. Pelfrey’s last start was okay, 5.1 innings and 3 runs against the Phillies on May 1st. Sweep!!!

Mets 7- Phillies 4 May 1, 2009

I didn’t particularly like what I saw from Mike Pelfrey tonight but he did enough to win. He went 5.1 innings giving up 3 runs, but I didn’t like that he had 4 walks and 0 strikeouts. I also didn’t like that he had 104 pitches in 5.1 innings. He was actually better at the plate than on the mound. He was 1 for 2 with 2 RBI’s.

On offense Daniel Murphy got things going in the first inning with a 2-run homer off Chan Ho Park. The Mets were beneficiaries of 8 walks from Phillies pitchers on the night. A good sign was that David Wright was 2 for 4 with a double, an RBI, and a walk. He needed a night like that badly. Of course, Fernando Tatis was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored. He just keeps on hitting in a tough role of not getting regular playing time. He looks pretty comfortable at first base too.

Once again, the Mets didn’t score runs late in the game. They didn’t score a run after the fifth. That’s been a recurring theme this season but it didn’t come back to bite them tonight.

The Mets get the important first game of the series in Philly. Tomorrow’s game is the Fox game of the week.

Game Preview: Mets at Phillies [Game 22] May 1, 2009

Philadelphia Phillies logoNew York Mets (9-12 Road: 3-6)  at Philadelphia Phillies (11-9 Home: 5-7) 7:05 pm

Mike Pelfrey (2-0 6.32) vs. Chan Ho Park (0-0 7.16)

TV: SNY  RadioWFAN

What to watch:  The Mets go to Philly after losing 2 of 3 games at home to the Marlins. The Phils have won 5 of 6 games against the Marlins and Nationals. Park has been pretty bad for the Phils, giving up at least 4 runs in his last three starts. But the Phils have won all of those games. Pelfrey had a solid start against the Nationals coming back from a forearm strain. We’ll find out this afternoon if Carlos Delgado (hip) and Luis Castillo (back) are healthy enough to play tonight.

Mets 8- Nationals 2 April 25, 2009

42509Mike Pelfrey had a pretty good game returning from forearm tendinitis and a missed start. He went 5.2 innings giving up 2 runs. What I didn’t like about his start was the 3 walks and 1 strikeout. But he did have almost all groundball outs which is signature Pelfrey. So it was a bit of a mixed bag in this start.

The Nationals are horrible defensively. They had 3 errors today after looking bad in the field last night as well. This team really needs a complete makeover. What a disaster.

Carlos Beltran kept up his hot hitting today going 3 for 5 and upping his season average to .415. Ryan Church was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI’s.
