Delgado’s 2 HR, 9 RBI Caps 15-6 Win Over Yanks

There was too much offense by the Mets to even cover it all in this recap. Jerry Manuel has to be very happy with what he saw today. He’s been looking for more offense from the Mets, and now we’ll see if they can be consistent with it.

Carlos Delgado went crazy today offensively. He set a Mets team record with 9 RBI’s. He was 3 for 5 with a double, two homers, one of which was a grand slam and the other was a three run shot.

Luis Castillo went 2 for 3 with 3 walks and 2 stolen bases and 5 runs scored. David Wright was 4 for 5 with 3 RBI’s.

Mike Pelfrey, the Mets’ starter, was shaky today after his three previous starts were very good. Pelfrey consistently had men on base but I liked the way he never let the game get completely out of hand. That’s a good sign. He went five innings giving up four runs on eight hits and four walks.

Fernando Tatis played first base and had two incredible diving plays but was charged with throwing errors on both plays. One of the plays should have been an error charged to Pelfrey who didn’t catch the ball.

New York Mets (38-39 Road: 17-23) at New York Yankees (42-36 Home:22-17)  2:05pm

TV: SNY, WWOR     Radio: WFAN

What to watch: This is the first game of the dual stadium double header today. This will be a battle of two very inexperienced starting pitchers. The Mets really need to make a statement this weekend against the Yankees after losing a home series to the Mariners.

Pelfrey Leads Mets To 3-1 Win Over Rockies

image

Mike Pelfrey went 5.2 innings for his fourth win of the season. He gave up no runs on three hits and five walks to go along with five strikeouts.

Jose Reyes led off the game with a triple for the second consecutive game, then scored on a single by David Wright. Carlos Beltran hit a long two run home run to right field into the second deck in the third inning. That was all of the scoring the Mets needed to get the win.

The Mets go home with a new manager after a 4-2 road trip and move to 3.5 games behind the first place Philadelphia Phillies.

On Deck: June 22- Mets At Rockies (Game 3)

New York Mets (36-37 Road: 16-23) at Colorado Rockies (32-43 Home: 20-18) 3:05pm

Mike Pelfrey (3-6 4.62) vs.Greg Reynolds (2-4 5.98)

TV: CW11  Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets and Rockies play the rubber game of the series before the Mets come home to face the Seattle Mariners. Pelfrey has had four pretty good starts in a row now but hasn’t faced the Rockies yet this season. Reynolds has been up and down for the Rockies as is the case for many rookie pitchers. He did get a win against the Mets on May 23 though. Brian Schneider probably won’t play today due to a bruised hand.

Beltran 2 HR Powers Mets 9-6 Over Angels

image

Carlos Beltran hit two solo homers, one in the first and one in the third inning. Mike Pelfrey got his first win since April 15.

Pelfrey’s line was six innings pitched giving up eight hits and two walks. He had no strikeouts. He gave up six runs but he was shaky in the seventh and didn’t get any outs. Pedro Feliciano came in to relieve in the seventh and was terrible giving up two RBI hits. He only got one out in the seventh.

Aaron Heilman came into the game in the seventh after Feliciano was ineffective. I thought that the Angels would break it open at that point but Heilman locked down the inning with two strikeouts.

Billy Wagner was a little shaky in the ninth inning again. He gave up a hit and a walk but got out of the inning with a line drive to Jose Reyes for a double play at second base.

Reyes was 2 for 4 with 3 runs scored and a stolen base as well.

On Deck: June 16- Mets At Angels

New York Mets (33-35 Road: 13-21) at Los Angeles Angels (42-28 Home: 21-16) 10:05pm

Mike Pelfrey (2-6 4.24) vs. Jered Weaver (6-6 4.45)

TV: SNY  Radio: WFAN

What to watch: Mets GM Omar Minaya traveled with the team to LA for the series, not a good sign for Willie Randolph. Randolph’s job is hanging by a thread and the team has played like garbage on the road this season. Mike Pelfrey was tremendous in his last start on June 11 against the D’Backs going eight innings and giving up one run. Jered Weaver also went eight innings giving up one run in his last start on June 10 against the Rays. Weaver has won four of his last five starts as well.

Here’s some morning audio for you after a devastating loss in 10 innings and series loss to the D’Backs. The Mets have lost six of seven games and appear to a .500 team, at best.

Fox Sports senior baseball writer Ken Rosenthal joins Steve Somers on WFAN.

Mike Pelfrey joins WFAN’s Joe & Evan to talk about his third straight good start for the Mets and Billy Wagner coming in to blow the lead.

Both audio clips are from June 12, 2008.
