Report: Front Office Unhappy With Randolph Last Night

NEW YORK - JUNE 11: Mike Pelfrey #34 of the New York Mets is removed from the game by manager Willie Randolph #12 in the ninth inning against the Arizona Diamonbacks on June 11, 2008 at Shea Stadium in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City.

Fox Sports Ken Rosenthal reports that the Mets front office was unhappy with Willie Randolph’s decision making on two points last night:

  1. Letting Mike Pelfrey talk Randolph into pitching the ninth inning
  2. Bringing Billy Wagner into a game during the middle of an inning

Personally, I thought that the game should have been Pelfrey’s to win or lose. I understand that the five game losing streak may have influenced the decision. But Pelfrey was the best pitcher in the stadium last night and should have kept pitching. I would have allowed him to give up more than one hit before pulling him.

Rosenthal goes on to write that the Mets players understand that it’s a foregone conclusion that Randolph will be fired at some point this season. They just want to get it over with and move on to eliminate the distraction hanging over the team.

Beltran’s 13th Inning Homer Wins It 5-3

The game started out with Mike Pelfrey pitching into the ninth inning without giving up a run. I thought that the game was in the bag. Billy Wagner blew his second consecutive save by giving up a homer to Mark Reynolds with two strikes and two outs in the ninth to send the game to extras.

Carlos Beltran had a huge game offensively getting the first two RBI’s on the board in the fourth inning on a single off Brandon Webb. Webb would leave after the fifth inning when he was hit by a line http://www.mindanews.com/buy-imitrex/ drive by Carlos Delgado.

I thought that Willie Randolph panicked by taking Pelfrey out in the ninth inning after giving up a single to Stephen Drew. Randolph doesn’t have a good feel for pitchers. Pelfrey looked great tonight. Once again, he isn’t throwing as hard as possible keeping his fastball in the low 90’s and spotting it perfectly. He threw very few breaking balls but doesn’t need to. He can’t control the slider as well as he needs to, but it was good enough tonight.

Mets Have A Tough Draw This Week

Although the Arizona Diamond Backs have been struggling nearly as badly as the Mets have over the past month, they come into New York fully loaded with starting pitchers. Micah Owings, Brandon Webb, and Dan Haren give the Mets reason for pause this week.

The Mets struggles are well documented, both from a seasonal perspective and from the debacle in San Diego last week. But they certainly expected to come home, get some veterans off the disabled list, and get right against the D-Backs and Rangers. After last night it’s clear that the Mets will continue to find ways to lose even with their "A" roster and at home.

Facing Brandon Webb and Dan Haren over the next two days provides the real possibility that the Mets losing streak could run to seven straight games. Webb is currently on pace to win 29 games this season. Take a look at his last ten games:

Brandon Webb Game Log Source: MLB.com

Other than a bad game in Atlanta on May 26 he’s been consistently solid or fantastic. So there’s no room for error tonight for Mike Pelfrey. The Mets offense will need to make the most of every chance to score that they get. Considering Pelfrey’s inconsistency this season and the Mets team batting line of .254/ .331/  .392 the chances are that’s an unlikely scenario.

On Deck: June 11- D-Backs At Mets

Arizona Diamond Backs (35-30) at New York Mets (30-33) 7:10pm

Brandon Webb (11-2 2.58) vs. Mike Pelfrey (2-6 4.65)

What to watch:  The Mets could be in big trouble tonight and tomorrow, facing the D-Backs two best pitchers. Former Cy Young Award winner Brandon Webb is on pace for a 29 win season. He beat the Mets on May 3, but didn’t have a great game going six innings and giving up four earned runs. Mike Pelfrey has pitched two quality starts in a row and needs to continue that trend tonight.

Mets Lose To Padres In Ninth 2-1

I’ll cut right to the chase. Scott Schoenweiss blew up in the bottom of the ninth. And I was getting worried that Aaron Heilman was warming up in the bullpen. Little did I know…

Schoenweiss walked two, then an intentional walk, and then hit Paul McAnulty with a pitch to bring home the winning run. What a horrible way to lose a game.

Jose Reyes made a couple of really nice plays in the field. He also went 2 for 3 with two stolen bases.

Mike Pelfrey was pitching out of trouble in most of his six innings. He gave up eight hits and three walks while only giving up one run. His line looks better than he actually pitched.

The Mets only run came in the sixth inning when Jose Reyes singled, stole second base, then scored on a single by David Wright.

Terrible loss. The Mets go to 2-2 on the road trip and one game over .500.
