Yankees 5 – Mets 0 June 27, 2009

The Mets got shutout for the second time this week. As bad as that is, you can’t take anything away from A.J. Burnett. He was excellent tonight combining with two relievers on a 1-hit shutout.

Tim Redding was doing pretty well too until the sixth inning. He completely lost it giving up four straight hits on four pitches. The killer was a 3-run homer by Jorge Posada.

There’s no offense to speak of with this Mets team right now. Thank goodness that Alex Cora got a hit to keep the Yankees from no-hitting the Mets at Citi Field. We’d never hear the end of it from the Yankees fans.

Yankees 9 – Mets 1 June 26, 2009

Although Mike Pelfrey didn’t have a bad game only allowing 2 earned runs in five innings, the Mets did the best they could to blow the game behind him. David Wright, Alex Cora, and Nick Evans committed the rare three errors in one inning during the second, that allowed 2 unearned runs to score during the 4 run inning. And that was pretty much it for the Mets.

The only offense of the night was a solo homer from Gary Sheffield in the fifth. Jerry Manuel was trying to get some more offense going by starting Ryan Church in center field. It didn’t generate any offense, but he did look good covering ground in the spacious area of Citi Field.

The bullpen didn’t help matter much last night behind Pelfrey either. Elmer Dessens got ripped for two homers in his second game as a Met, raising his ERA to 8.10, which is what I expected from him when he joined the team. Sean Green reverted to old form by giving up 2 runs in the ninth inning raising his ERA to an ugly 5.45.

Game Preview: Yankees at Mets [Game 72] June 26, 2009

Yankees LogoNew York Yankees (40-32 Road: 19-18) at New York Mets (37-34 Home: 22-14)   7:10 pm

CC Sabathia (69-4 3.71) vs. Mike Pelfrey (5-2 4.74)

TV: SNY, WWOR  Radio:  WFAN

What to watch: The Yankees come to Citi Field having won four of their last six games against the Marlins and Braves. Sabathia left his last start in Florida after 1.1 innings after feeling a bicep problem. But the Yanks are running him out there again tonight. We’ll see if that’s a wise decision. Pelfrey’s been up and down, but the bottom line is that the Mets have lost three of the last four games that Pelfrey started. He hasn’t shown the kind of growth that we would have expected from him. It’s time for him to kick it up a notch. Gary Sheffield should be available to play the field tonight after having a cortisone shot in his knee on Wednesday.
