Oliver Perez (2-3 6.38) vs. Jon Garland (6-10 4.33)

TV: SNY

What to watch: The Mets try to avoid a sweep again before coming home to face the Giants starting on Friday. Perez had his best start of year against the Padres last Friday going 6.1 innings and giving up just 1 run. Garland threw a complete game win against the Mets on Aug. 2, but got hammered by the Nationals for a loss in his last start.

Audio: Manuel, Perez, K-Rod Aug. 7, 2009

Here’s the post-game audio from last night’s devastating loss. It’s ironic that Oliver Perez had such a terrific start and the Mets end up losing one of their more stunning losses of the season. And that saying something for this team.

The Mets found another stunning way to lose which they specialize in doing, especially in San Diego. Tonight they got an astoundingly good start from Oliver Perez. He cruised through the first 6 innings only allowing 1 hit and no walks. But he started to lose it in the seventh giving up a hit and two walks to score a run. Overall, it looked like a real breakthrough start for Perez. He was using a new pause during his windup that seemed to really help him.

The Mets didn’t do much on offense again, only getting 7 hits and 3 walks. They scored both runs in the first inning. Then nothing for the rest of the game. For the second straight game they only had one extra base hit in the game, a double by David Wright. Very poor hitting against a sub-par Padres team.

The ninth inning is when things got crazy. Francisco Rodriguez blew his second straight save opportunity. As a matter of fact, he didn’t even get an out in the ninth. The Padres scored the tying run on a bad call at the plate. But that wasn’t the real issue. K-Rod loaded the bases on 2 hits and 3 walks (1 intentional), then gave up a grand slam to light-hitting shortstop Everth Cabrera of all people. And that was the game.

Another stunning loss for this team.

Oliver Perez (2-3 7.03) vs. Kevin Correia (7-9 4.73)

TV: SNY

What to watch: Perez returns to San Diego, his original team, for the start tonight. He’s pitched 5 or 6 innings in every start since returning from the DL. It would be nice to see him stretch that out and cut down on his walks. Correia has pitched two decent games in a row now. Expect to see Anderson Hernandez in the lineup tonight.

Max Scherzer (6-6 3.61) vs. Oliver Perez (2-3 7.42)

TV: WPIX

What to watch: Scherzer has been pitching pretty well this season: 111 K’s and only 40 BB’s. He’s been a little inconsistent but not compared to the guy he’s pitching against today. Perez hasn’t won a game since July 8 and hasn’t gone more than 6 innings since coming off the disabled list four starts ago.

Mets 7 – Rockies 3 July 27, 2009

It was another average, or maybe below-average start for Oliver Perez tonight. He went 5 innings giving up 3 runs on 103 pitches. And again, he had 4 walks. Perez just hasn’t been able to cut those down. The 3 runs he gave up were on two home runs as well. Brian Stokes put up two nice, scoreless innings in relief.

Jeff Francoeur homered again in the fourth inning. And the Mets put up 2 runs in the sixth inning to tie the game. The big hit came in the bottom of the eighth inning. Fernando Tatis hit a pinch hit grand slam with one out on an 0-2 count. I was completely expecting him to hit into another double play. But he hit a bomb to left-center. It’s great to see that from him. He’s had such a bad year after his big comeback last season.

Ubaldo Jimenez (7-9 3.85) vs. Oliver Perez (2-3 7.68)

TV: SNY

What to watch: The Rockies come into town hot, going 7-3 in their last 10 games and leading the wild card race by 2 games over the Giants. Jimenez is a very good pitcher, especially away from Coors Field. He’s 3-5 with a 3.73 ERA and .224 BAA on the road this year. Perez took a loss to the Nationals in his last start giving up 4 runs in 6 innings. As usual, he needs to cut down on the walks. He’s walked 17 in 17 innings since coming off the disabled list.
