Mets Re-Sign Oliver Perez To Three Year Deal

Oliver PerezMedia outlets are reporting the Mets re-signed starting pitcher Oliver Perez to a 3-year/$36 million contract. The native of Mexico will be 28 years old in August. Perez has been with the Mets since being traded at the deadline in 2006 with Roberto Hernandez for Xavier Nady.

Perez is 26-20 since he joined the Mets and is noted for his high ceiling and inconsistency. He did seem to flourish last season after pitching coach Rick Peterson was fired and Dan Warthen took over the coaching duties. He went 6-2 after Warthen took over in June.

It’s nice to see that Mets GM Omar Minaya is keeping the length of contracts to pitchers to a minimum. By signing Perez and Francisco Rodriguez this offseason to three year contracts the Mets are able to maintain financial flexibility by not locking into long term contracts.

Mets And Oliver Perez In Waiting Game

There were media reports that the Mets wanted to get a deal done with Oliver Perez by today. We haven’t received word from the Mets or Scott Boras that anything has been settled yet. So, we keep waiting.

Adam Rubin of the NY Daily News has some good information from the BBWAA New York chapter dinner tonight. The topics are:

  1. The Mets are waiting out Ollie because there doesn’t appear to be another team bidding against them.
  2. Randy Wolf’s agent, Arn Tellem, has stayed in touch with the Mets. So the Mets will probably get a call before Wolf signs a contract with anyone else, including the Dodgers.
  3. After reviewing Ben Sheets’ medical records, the Mets don’t appear to be interested in doing a two year contract with him.

This whole off-season has been so strange for free agents. I’ve said this before, but there are a lot of free agents right now that should sign one year contracts and hope for a better economic environment next year. Ben Sheets is definitely one of them.

SI.com’s Jon Heyman is reporting that the Mets went back to Scott Boras with a better offer for Oliver Perez. Initially, the Mets offered 3-years/$30 million but pulled the offer when Perez didn’t accept it.

The word on the street is that the Mets have gone to four years for Ollie. I think that’ll max out the duration that they’ll offer. The money is probably still negotiable though.
