On Deck: July 7- Mets At Phillies (Game 4)

New York Mets (44-44 Road: 22-26) at Philadelphia Phillies (48-41 Home: 23-20) 7:05pm

Pedro Martinez (2-2 7.39) vs. Adam Eaton (3-6 4.79)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets are coming off a huge 12th inning homer for the win by Fernando Tatis. Look for Tatis to be in the starting lineup tonight. Pedro has been really bad since coming back from the disabled list. He needs to be on his game if the Mets are going anywhere this year. Eaton is 1-3 in his last four games. But the only game that he really got bombed in was on June 20th against the Los Angeles Angels.

The Philadelphia Phillies announced today that relief pitcher Tom Gordon was going on the 15-day disabled list with elbow inflammation in his throwing arm. He’s been pitching this season with a partially torn rotator cuff, but apparently the elbow injury has become too much for him to pitch in back to back games.

Phillies Sign Lidge To Extension

MILWAUKEE - APRIL 24: Brad Lidge #54 of the Ph...Image by Getty Images via Daylife

The Philadelphia Phillies announced that they’ve signed a three year contract extension with closer Brad Lidge today. He’s having a great season so far for the Phils. Hopefully, the Mets won’t see him today. He’s sure to be in a good mood after signing his new 3 year/ $37.5 million deal.

The Phillies obtained Lidge in a trade with the Houston Astros prior to this season. He’s currently playing under his last available year of arbitration for a 1 year/ $6.35 million contract that was signed to avoid arbitration.

On Deck: July 6- Mets At Phillies (Game 3)

New York Mets (43-44 Road: 21-26) at Philadelphia Phillies (48-40 Home: 23-19) 1:35pm

Oliver Perez (6-5 4.98) vs. Kyle Kendrick (8-3 4.58)

TV: CW11 Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets cut the Phillies lead down to 4.5 games last night and have a chance to do some more damage this afternoon. Perez is coming off his best start of the season against the Yankees but hasn’t pitched in seven days so the Mets could separate he and Johan Santana. We’ll see how that affects his game. Kendrick is 6-1 in his last ten starts so he’s been pitching really well for the Phillies.

NL East News: Phillies In Atlanta Video

The Philadelphia Phillies are in Atlanta for a three game series against the Braves starting tonight. The ideal scenario for the Mets is for the Braves to win at least two of the games at home. Considering that the Braves are 28-14 at home this season, that’s likely to occur.

The Phillies are 2-8 in their last ten games. Hopefully, they don’t get hot in Atlanta before the Mets go to Philly for a four game series beginning on Friday.

Of course, the Mets need to win some games in St. Louis this week too. Last night wasn’t a good start to the series with every facet of the game going wrong for the Mets. But there’s an opportunity for the Mets to go into Philly with a chance to take the division lead if everything breaks right this week.

Mets Looking At Freel- Phillies At Pitching

Jayson Stark’s Rumblings and Grumblings column today contains a few Mets references:

  1. The list of managers that the Mets will be looking at for 2009
  2. The Mets have some interest in the Cincinnati Reds’ Ryan Freel

He also talks about the Phillies desire to bolster their starting pitching via trade.  He says that they’ve looked at C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Bronson Arroyo, Jared Washburn, and will be looking at Erik Bedard. Their problem is that they don’t have much left in the minors for a trade. So they’d have to “empty the tank” to make a deal.

Ryan Freel would be a nice fit with the Mets.  His scrappy play and ability to play the infield and outfield would certainly be an asset for the Mets aging, injury-prone roster.  His current line is .298/ .340/ .359 with 6 SB’s in 131 at-bats.
