Phillies Fans Reach New Low

Reason #432,681 to avoid Philadelphia and Citizens Bank Park:

Deadspin reports on Dollar Dog Night in Philadelphia on Wednesday night. One dollar hot dogs and reduced ticket prices for college students proves to be a toxic mix… even by Philadelphia standards. The post is complete with degrading pictures of passed out fans in the parking lot and the food fight during the eighth inning.

As a sophisticated and suave New York Mets fan, I turn my nose at these low-life fans in Philly. Stay out of our stadium, please.

Baseball Predictions Galore!

It seems like every baseball column that I’m reading today is filled with fearless prognostications. Personally, I think it’s silly so I’m not going to get into it. Predicting a team’s record after 162 game season?

You may say “Hey, you’ve linked to columns and videos with season predictions!”. Why? I’ve added a few links to prediction columns but I’ve been selective about it. I only link to my favorite columnists. I only add links to the writers that usually “get it right”.

I will say this: I’ll be moderately surprised if the Mets don’t win the East. The Phillies are pretty good, but not that good. Everyone else in the division looks like a sub-.500 team to me. It’s amazing how many people are picking the Braves to win the division or more this year!

Anyway, the reason for this post is that I found a good prediction column on Yahoo. It encompasses all of their baseball columnists at once. That’s the way to do it. Nice photo of Johan Santana in the column too.

Phillies News: Brad Lidge on 15 Day DL

ESPN reports that Brad Lidge will start the season on the disabled list. Last month he had arthroscopic surgery on his knee. The Mets won’t see Lidge in their home opening series at Shea April 8-10. The news is disappointing to Mets fans. We can’t wait to see him implode and lose a game for the Phils. Read the full article here.

Baseball Analysts: 2008 NL East Rookie Preview

The Baseball Analysts have a good site if you’re into stat-heavy analysis. Today they published their 2008 NL East rookie preview. The Mets have no rookies that expect to get significant playing time this year, so there’s no Mets on the list. But there are some rookies that sound pretty good like Cameron Maybin in Florida (from the Tigers) and Carlos Carrasco in Philly.

Of Carrasco they wrote:

“As mentioned above, the need to hurry Carrasco has been lessened, but the likes of Benson and Adam Eaton won’t keep him down for long. Carrasco has been moved through the system aggressively and has responded well, although his numbers did dip noticeably in Double-A. The biggest warning sign was the increase in his walk ratio (5.89 BB/9). That obviously has to improve. Although Carrasco handles lefties almost as well as righties in terms of batting average allowed (.252 vs LH, .248 vs RH at Double-A), lefties are much more successful at getting on base and hitting the ball hard .855 OPS vs .690 OPS at Double-A), which is something the soon-to-be 21 year old will have to work on. If Carrasco can show improvements in the first half of 2008, don’t be surprise to see him recalled in July or August to add fuel to the Phillies’ playoff run.”

Phillies are still talking

The Phillies and Mets can’t stop talking about each other this spring. Neither team has even played an exhibition game yet. The season series is going to be intense this year, more than past seasons. Of course, Jimmy Rollins and Carlos Beltran got things started. Billy Wagner and an unnamed Philly player upped the ante to start talking about brawling. Kevin Kernan of the Post explains.
