Nationals 5 – Mets 3 May 19, 2010

Mets hitter Pagan celebrates his home run against the Nationals during the fourth inning of their MLB National League game in Washington

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets got a quality start from knuckleballer R.A. Dickey who went 6 IP and gave up 2 ER’s. He did pretty well for himself throwing 96 pitches and looked like he could have gone further in the game. The bullpen couldn’t hold on with Raul Valdes and the tired Fernando Nieve giving up 3 runs between them.

The offense was pretty weak again with the Mets only getting 5 hits as a team. One was an inside the park home run by Angel Pagan.

Pagan seems to be one of the only guys going out to make plays on a daily basis. He also started a triple play in the fifth. It was partially due to some poor work by the umpires. They were slow to make a call on whether Pagan caught a shoestring catch and that left the base runners hanging.

The Mets look pretty lifeless and feels more and more like watching the 2009 Mets.

Preview: Mets at Nationals May 19, 2010

New York Mets (19-21) at Washington Nationals (20-20)  7:05 pm

R.A. Dickey (0-0 -.–) vs Livan Hernandez (4-2 1.46)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: Dickey makes his big league season debut after pitching really well at Buffalo. He was 4-2 with a 2.23 ERA including 2 complete games and a 1.04 WHIP. You can’t do much better than that. Hernandez is pitching better than we’ve seen from him in years. He beat the Mets on April 11 throwing 7 shutout innings.

Washington Nationals Unlikely To Continue Success in 2010

Top first year draft pick Stasburg joins the Washington Nationals

The Nationals are playing very well right now.  They’re winning against quality teams and in every type of game.  As someone who often roots for the underdog, I wouldn’t mind seeing the Nationals stay in the NL East race for a while, but I think their ride near the top of the division won’t last too much longer.  They clearly have a great chance to end up with a much better record than they did in 2009, when they went 59-103, but getting close to 90 wins still seems beyond their capabilities.

Their record is an astonishing 20-15 and they are only 1 game behind the Phillies.  Even after their big win against the Rockies last night, they still have a negative run differential (was -16, now -8 after their big win).  While there are a number of reasons why their smashing success is unlikely to continue, I’ll just touch on a few here. Nationals 6 – Mets 4 May 12, 2010

I didn’t get to see much after the first few innings today. I was at work and couldn’t watch it. Now that I know the outcome I’ll probably skip watching it on Tivo. Francisco Rodriguez blew it in the ninth giving up Roger Bernadina’s second home run of the game.

The Mets lose another home series to the Nationals. Just when you start to think they’re playing better, something like this happens. They leave for a four game series in Miami starting tomorrow night.

Washington Nationals (18-15) at New York Mets (18-15)   1:10 pm

Craig Stammen (1-1 5.63) vs Mike Pelfrey (4-1 2.65)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets and Nats play the rubber game of the series this afternoon. The Nats have lost the last three games that Stammen started. Although he really hasn’t pitched terribly. Pelfrey recovered nicely in his last start against the Giants after getting ripped by the Phillies for 6 runs.

Washington Nationals (18-14) at New York Mets (17-15)   7:10 pm

Scott Olsen (2-1 3.54) vs Jon Niese (1-1 3.60)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: Olsen is pitching really well right now. He’s only given up 1 ER in his last three starts covering 20.1 IP. Niese has been consistent this season. He did give up 4 ER in 6 IP in his last start in Cincinnati. The Mets need to win the next two games to avoid losing another home series to the Nats.
