Mets Have A Tough Draw This Week

Although the Arizona Diamond Backs have been struggling nearly as badly as the Mets have over the past month, they come into New York fully loaded with starting pitchers. Micah Owings, Brandon Webb, and Dan Haren give the Mets reason for pause this week.

The Mets struggles are well documented, both from a seasonal perspective and from the debacle in San Diego last week. But they certainly expected to come home, get some veterans off the disabled list, and get right against the D-Backs and Rangers. After last night it’s clear that the Mets will continue to find ways to lose even with their "A" roster and at home.

Facing Brandon Webb and Dan Haren over the next two days provides the real possibility that the Mets losing streak could run to seven straight games. Webb is currently on pace to win 29 games this season. Take a look at his last ten games:

Other than a bad game in Atlanta on May 26 he’s been consistently solid or fantastic. So there’s no room for error tonight for Mike Pelfrey. The Mets offense will need to make the most of every chance to score that they get. Considering Pelfrey’s inconsistency this season and the Mets team batting line of .254/ .331/  .392 the chances are that’s an unlikely scenario.

Mets Roster Move: June 11- Nunez

After the loss to the D-Backs last night the Mets announced that Abraham Nunez was designated for assignment. There wasn’t a corresponding addition to the roster but Omar Minaya told reporters that it would probably be a position player.

There’s been some speculation that the player added to the roster may be Jose Valentin. He went to Triple-A New Orleans a few days ago to continue his rehab from a neck injury.

What to watch:  The Mets could be in big trouble tonight and tomorrow, facing the D-Backs two best pitchers. Former Cy Young Award winner Brandon Webb is on pace for a 29 win season. He beat the Mets on May 3, but didn’t have a great game going six innings and giving up four earned runs. Mike Pelfrey has pitched two quality starts in a row and needs to continue that trend tonight.

Mets Drop Fifth Consecutive; Lose To Arizona 9-5

The Mets started the game looking great with John Maine getting through five innings; Carlos Delgado hustling for an extra base on a single and an error; Moises Alou coming back and looking great but it all fell apart. The Mets lose their fifth consecutive game and first of the series to Arizona.

Maine went only five innings giving up three runs while throwing 101 pitches. Claudio Vargas lost the lead in the sixth inning before there was the game was suspended due to thunderstorms.

Duaner Sanchez got bombed in the ninth inning. He gave up three runs on two homers to Stephen Drew and Connor Jackson.

On offense David Wright had a home run to left in the second inning. Moises Alou came back with a key two RBI single in the first inning, it was on the first pitch he saw back from the disabled list.

The Met struggles continue with the only good news being that the Phillies finally lost a game. So the Mets stay even at 7.5 games back.
