Mets Designate Marlon Anderson For Assignment

Livan Hernandez joined the Mets roster today and Marlon Anderson was designated for assignment. It wasn’t a surprise for anyone. The speculation has been going on for weeks. Anderson can either accept an assignment to Triple-A Buffalo or become a free agent.

Anderson has been very successful since 2005 as a part-time player and pinch hitter. He got off to a bad start with the Dodgers in 2007 and was released in July of that year. The Mets picked him up the next day as a free agent and signed him to a 2-year deal after the season.

The Mets stand to eat $1.1 million on Anderson’s guaranteed contract.

gary-sheffieldThe Mets arrived in Miami last night to begin their weekend series with the Marlins. The biggest story looming is the addition of Livan Hernandez to the roster so he can start tomorrow night. Of course, this wouldn’t be an issue if Gary Sheffield hadn’t signed as a free agent last week. The big decision is whether the Mets release Marlon Anderson, owing him $1.1 million for this season or go to 11 pitchers. Likely, Darren O’Day would be the odd man out if that was the case. Jerry Manuel has hinted that Anderson will be out.

Also of note is that O’Day and Francisco Rodriguez were teammates last season of Nick Adenhart, who was tragically killed in a car accident after starting for the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday.

An interesting media story is that Chris “Mad Dog” Russo is not allowed to do his Sirius satellite radio broadcast from Citi Field or Yankee Stadium. CBS Radio and WFAN have exclusive deals with the Mets and Yankees about radio broadcasting rights. Apparently, this was even an issue during spring training last month as well.

Nick Evans was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo today to make room on the roster for OF Gary Sheffield. The move doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone. In fact, it never made sense to me to keep Evans on the big league roster if he wasn’t going to get significant playing time. The guy just turned 23 years old in January. What good does it do for him to sit on the bench?

Evans needs to be playing every day at Buffalo. The best thing the Mets can do for him is to prepare him to be an everyday player. Hopefully, next season Carlos Delgado will be gone and Evans can take over at first base. Keeping him on the roster as a pinch-hitter and part-time player isn’t in his best interest or the Mets.

The bigger issue will be what the Mets do next Saturday to get Livan Hernandez on the roster. Most likely, they’ll release Marlon Anderson and keep Jeremy Reed as a defensive replacement outfielder. That makes the most sense to me. An option they have is to move one of the relief pitchers off the roster though. Bobby Parnell still has options so they could send him to Buffalo. But I think they like him and believe that he can make a contribution this season. My guess is that Marlon Anderson is waived.

Wright Call Lands Sheffield For Mets

David WrightThe newest Met, Gary Sheffield, spoke to the media today after the last exhibition game of the season against the Red Sox. Sheffield talked about how his uncle, Dwight Gooden, had spoken to him over the years about signing with the Mets. But it never quite worked out, until now.

One interesting fact that came out during the press conference was that David Wright called Sheffield urging him to sign with the Mets. Jimmy Rollins from the Philadelphia Phillies and Dusty Baker from the Cincinnati Reds had also put calls into Sheffield.It seems that Sheffield was most impressed that Wright made the effort to get in touch with him about signing with the Mets.

From ESPN:

“When you have the face of the franchise making a call to you, that means a lot,” said Sheffield, who’s one home run shy of 500. “You never want to tell other people you’re going the other way, but when he made that call I made my decision.”

Apparently, David Wright really has some clout around baseball now. That’s great for a young guy that hasn’t been around that long to have established himself. We’ll see how much Marlon Anderson, Ryan Church, and Daniel Murphy appreciate Wright’s call to Sheffield. They’re the ones that stand to lose the most by Sheffield’s presence on the team.

Mets Tatis Comeback Player Of The Year

Mets outfielder Fernando Tatis received a well-deserved award this week from the Major League Baseball Players Association, the Comeback Player of the Year Award. His work in the outfield was a little shaky at times, but you can’t deny that his offense was fantastic. Tatis had more clutch hits this season than any player, including the guys that were out there every day.

Tatis’ line was awesome: 92 G| 273 AB| .297| .369| .484| 11 HR| 47 RBI| 123 OPS+. Compare that to Carlos Delgado’s OPS+ of 127.

Tatis was even more valuable to the Mets than expected with Moises Alou going down for the season again in May. There’s no way that Omar Minaya expected to get 273 AB’s out of Tatis when they brought him up to the majors. Hopefully, the free agent will sign a new deal with the Mets. If they signed Marlon Anderson last off-season to a two-year deal, they should certainly offer two years to Tatis.

Mets OF Marlon Anderson To DL- Dan Murphy Joining Team

Marlon Anderson is headed for the disabled list with a hamstring injury. He’s been struggling through that for a couple of months now. He hasn’t hit much this season at all to the tune of .222/ .259/ .294. Considering that he’s a liability in the outfield, his value to the team is very limited right now.

David Lennon of Newsday reports that Dan Murphy is on his way to Houston from New Orleans and the roster move will be made official when Murphy arrives.

Mike Pelfrey got bombed and lost a game for the first time since May. He only went four innings and gave up five runs in the fourth inning. Joe Smith also had a bad inning in the eighth, giving up two runs on two walks and a hit.

Marlon Anderson had a big offensive game going 3 for 4 with 2 runs. That’s good to see because he’s looked completely lost at the plate recently. Anderson also looked smoother in left field than he has before. He must be shagging some fly balls because he looked more comfortable out there last night.

Damion Easley hit a big three-run, pinch hit home run in the seventh to get within one run of the Marlins but it wasn’t enough. The Mets did get a nice rally going in the ninth as well but they couldn’t sustain it long enough to tie or win the game.

The Mets are off on Thursday and in Houston on Friday with Pedro on the mound.
