Pedro Looks Great As Mets Over Giants 9-6

The game wasn’t as close as the score appears for those of you that didn’t stay up until 1:20am to watch the whole game. Pedro Martinez was fantastic going six innings and throwing his fastball in the low 90’s with regularity. I was shocked that he had that kind of velocity. I was also shocked that he went six innings.

The Mets had a long turn at bat in the fifth when they scored eight runs, the most of any inning this season. But Pedro came back out for the top of the sixth. He looked like he was starting to get a little shaky in the fifth and sixth but it was a great comeback game for him.

Offensively, one of the stars of the game was… Pedro Martinez. I’m not kidding. He went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run. Damion Easley was 3 for 4 with 3 RBI’s and a run.

Barry Zito was horrible again. It’s a real warning sign about signing pitchers to long term contracts. His contract may go down as the worst contract in baseball history. Although Kevin Brown and Mike Hampton have had awful contracts as well.

Scott Schoenweiss looked like he reverted to 2007 form in the ninth inning. He went .1 innings giving up two hits (one homer) and two walks for three runs. Billy Wagner had to quickly warm up and bail him out.

Casanova Leaving Mets For Bereavement

The New York Post is reporting that Raul Casanova is leaving the team immediately because his father passed away. The Mets can replace him on the roster, and he can leave the team for three to seven days.

Although I don’t think that having a third catcher on the team added a lot of value, he’s done a nice job when he’s played. It seems like he’s made an offensive contribution in every game that he’s started.

Welcome Back Pedro, Your Age Is Showing

The local papers and talk shows are buzzing about the return of Pedro Martinez to the Mets, and the introduction of Joba Chamberlain to the starting rotation for the Yankees. Check the back pages and the sports talk shows this afternoon and that’s all that you’ll hear about.

It’ll be a fun night because New York baseball fans will get to see Joba for the Yankees early and then Pedro in the nightcap from San Francisco. Both teams need a boost from their pitchers. The Yanks are toiling away in fourth place, seven games behind the Rays. Equally as mediocre, the Mets are also in fourth place and four and a half games back of the Phillies.

Unfortunately, I like the Yankees’ chances better with a young, power arm coming into the rotation from the bullpen. The Mets are relying on Pedro Martinez to utilize his guile because his power has long since disappeared from his 36 year old arm. Continue reading “Welcome Back Pedro, Your Age Is Showing”

Alou And Bartman Back In The News

CHICAGO - AUGUST 5: Moises Alou #18 of the New York Mets congratulates teammate Luis Castillo #1 after Castillo scored a run in the 5th inning against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field August 5, 2007 in Chicago, Illinois.

This is the story that’s been going on for five years since the 2003 NLCS. It resurfaced in March when AP columnist Jim Litke quoted Moises Alou as saying that he wouldn’t have caught the ball that Steve Bartman interfered with anyway in Chicago.

Today Alou is saying that he would have caught the ball and didn’t remember telling Litke that he wouldn’t. Apparently, Litke ran into Alou at a store and asked him about it. Alou says that if he did say that, it was in jest to encourage people to forgive Bartman.

The funny thing about it is that the ball was hit by Alou’s current teammate, Luis Castillo then with the Florida Marlins.

I think I’ll have to add a new category to my blog for stories that won’t go away…
