Game Preview: Rockies at Mets [Game 99] July 28, 2009

rockiesColorado Rockies (54-45 Road: 27-24) at New York Mets (47-51 Home: 26-20)   7:10pm

Jason Marquis (12-6 3.49) vs. Mike Pelfrey (7-6 4.99)

TV: SNY

What to watch: Marquis has had an unbelievable season so far. He’s 3-1 in his last four games, including going at least 8 innings in three of those starts. Pelfrey is 1-3 in his last four starts including two terrible stinkers. He needs to start showing us something before this season ends up being a failure for him.

rockiesColorado Rockies (54-44 Road: 27-23) at New York Mets (46-51 Home: 25-20)   7:10pm

Ubaldo Jimenez (7-9 3.85) vs. Oliver Perez (2-3 7.68)

TV: SNY

What to watch: The Rockies come into town hot, going 7-3 in their last 10 games and leading the wild card race by 2 games over the Giants. Jimenez is a very good pitcher, especially away from Coors Field. He’s 3-5 with a 3.73 ERA and .224 BAA on the road this year. Perez took a loss to the Nationals in his last start giving up 4 runs in 6 innings. As usual, he needs to cut down on the walks. He’s walked 17 in 17 innings since coming off the disabled list.

Game Preview: Mets at Astros [Game 97] July 26, 2009

Livan Hernandez (6-5 4.93) vs. Brian Moehler (7-5 4.92)

TV: SNY

What to watch: The Mets and Astros play the rubber game of the series before the Mets finally head home from this long road trip. Hernandez had a great start in Washington going 7 innings and only giving up 2 runs. He had several clunkers before that, and there was even speculation that he could lose his spot in the rotation. Moehler has been very consistent. He hasn’t allowed more than 3 earned runs in a game since June 9. He’s 5-1 in his last seven starts.

Game Preview: Mets at Astros [Game 96] July 25, 2009

astrosNew York Mets (44-51 Road: 19-31)  at Houston Astros (50-46 Home: 28-23) 7:05pm

Jon Niese (0-0 5.91) vs. Russ Ortiz (3-4 4.33)

TV: WPIX

What to watch: Niese is making his third big league start of the season. He got bombed by the Braves on May 13 and he’s been in Buffalo ever since. He’s been pitching well there, so we’ll see if that translates into a good start in Houston. Ortiz has gone back and forth from the bullpen to the rotation. This is his twelfth start of the season. He hasn’t won a game since a relief appearance on June 2. Frankly, he’s lucky to still be in the league after some of the miserable seasons that he’s had over the past few years. We’ll see if Gary Sheffield is healed enough to play tonight. If not, he may land on the disabled list with plenty of company.

Game Preview: Mets at Astros [Game 95] July 24, 2009

astrosNew York Mets (44-50 Road: 19-30)  at Houston Astros (49-46 Home: 27-23) 8:05pm

Johan Santana (11-7 2.92) vs. Mike Hampton (5-7 4.63)

TVSNY

What to watch: The Astros just swept the Cardinals and have won five of their last seven games. Former Met Hampton has been hit hard in his last two starts and lost both games. Santana has pitched three excellent games in a row. As always, the Mets need him to stop the bleeding after losing a series to the Nationals.

Game Preview: Mets at Nationals [Game 94] July 22, 2009

washington nationals logoNew York Mets (44-49 Road: 19-29)  at Washington Nationals (27-66 Home: 17-31) 7:05pm

Mike Pelfrey (7-5 5.07) vs. Craig Stammen (2-54.46)

TVSNY RadioWFAN

What to watch: The Mets and Nationals play the rubber game of the series tonight. Pelfrey is coming off getting bombed by the Braves for 9 runs in 4.1 innings in his last start. Stammen has pitched well in his last three starts and hasn’t given up more than 3 runs in any of them. He also pitched a complete game win in Houston on July 11. So this won’t be a cake walk for the Mets, not that any games ever are anymore.

Game Preview: Mets at Nationals [Game 93] July 21, 2009

washington nationals logoNew York Mets (44-48 Road: 19-28)  at Washington Nationals (26-66 Home: 16-31) 7:05pm

Oliver Perez (2-2 7.99) vs. John Lannan (6-7 3.64)

TVSNY RadioWFAN

What to watch: Perez has been decent in his two starts since returning from the disabled list. He’s allowed 5 earned runs in 11 innings. But he’s also allowed 8 walks. That’s what he needs to improve tonight. Lannan has had an excellent season for a terrible Nationals team. But he’s lost his last two decisions to the Astros and Cubs.
