D-Backs 9- Mets 6 July 30, 2010

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsMike Pelfrey just hasn’t been able to get it together once again tonight. He went 5.2 innings and gave up 4 earned runs on 8 hits and 4 walks. The umpire behind the plate was pretty bad with one of the smallest strike zones I’ve seen in a while. That certainly didn’t help.

Surprisingly, Pelfrey wasn’t the worst pitcher of the night for the Mets. Raul Valdes had his worst game as a Met giving up 4 runs without recording an out in the sixth. He gave up two homers and had absolutely nothing. It was a surprise because he’s been so good with what doesn’t appear to be great stuff.

The bright spot of the night was David Wright going 3 for 4 with two homers in his first two at-bats. Those homers resulted in 5 RBI’s tonight for him.

This is the Mets fourth straight loss to the horrible D-Backs team. They need to toughen up and get some payback this weekend.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsIt took a great comeback to get into the game but the Mets ended up losing it in 13 innings. Johan Santana had one of the worst starts of his career giving up 6 runs on 8 hits… In the first inning! He gathered himself to go 5.2 innings but the damage was severe.

The Mets bullpen did a great job including Francisco Rodriguez throwing 2 scoreless innings. He did have a little trouble, as usual, giving up a hit and a walk but managed to work out of it.

The Mets offense was pretty solid with 13 hits and 5 walks in the game. Jose Reyes and David Wright had 3 hits apiece. Angel Pagan and Carlos Beltran both had home runs in the nice comeback. Ike Davis had a big 2 RBI pinch hit in the eighth inning that tied the game and would eventually send it to extras.

Pedro Feliciano gave it up to Albert Pujols in the 13th to lose it. That’s a terrible match up for Feliciano but they didn’t have much choice left in the bullpen. Oliver Perez was about all they had left and that’s a bad match up against anyone.

The Mets and Cardinals are even at 1 apiece in the series. They’ll play an early one at noon tomorrow in the rubber game.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsI was at the game last night so I got home too late to work on the game recap. Here’s the box score of the game for you. Big three-run homer from Jeff Francoeur and another nice start from Jon Niese were the stories of the game. Not to mention that the Mets continue their winning ways after home after getting beaten to a pulp on the west coast.

Here’s the post-game audio.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets had no offense again and go down in flames for the ninth time on this road trip. R.A. Dickey was pitching well into the sixth when he appeared to injure his leg on a fielding play in front of the plate. Jerry Manuel pulled him with two outs in the sixth and the two had words on the mound. He was pitching masterfully only allowing 2 hits, no runs, no walks, and had 6 strikeouts.

The Mets offense was weak again with only 7 hits and 1 walk. Luis Castillo had 2 hits in the game and the Mets had 3 doubles but Clayton Kershaw is a tough pitcher and the Mets offense has been dreadful. That’s a bad combination leading to the Mets getting shut out again.

Pedro Feliciano gave it up in the eighth inning on a Russell Martin double that scored Matt Kemp and that was the game.

The Mets head home from a 2-9 road trip and will certainly face some dissatisfied home fans.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets got a fair start from Mike Pelfrey going 5 innings and allowing 2 runs. That’s a major upgrade from his most recent starts. The Mets bullpen took over and threw 5+ shutout innings for Pelfrey and the game went to 13 innings tied 2-2.

The Mets offense was pretty weak with 9 hits and 4 walks over the 13 inning span. Jose Reyes and Jason Bay were both 2 for 5 in the game. But the only extra base hits were doubles by Ike Davis and Luis Castillo. Angel Pagan did have two steals in the game.

Rod Barajas left the game with a strained oblique muscle suffered during an at-bat. Oddly, it was a hit which he hasn’t had many of lately.

Oliver Perez blew the game in the 13th allowing a home run to James Loney. It’s gotten to the point where he can’t do anything right for this team. His new role as lefty specialist isn’t working out so well when he gives up a walk off homer to a lefty on a tough road trip.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets got only their second victory on this long road trip and, really, their first legitimate win. Johan Santana was in complete control again going 7 innings and allowing only 1 run. He only gave up 5 hits and 1 walk. He was in control throughout the game. It was a classic Santana start.

The offense finally came alive after sleepwalking for the last week. The Mets had 8 hits and 4 walks. Surprisingly, Jason Bay was the star going 2 for 4 with a 3-run double in the eighth inning that broke the game open. He was out for early batting practice and it showed, not to mention he was moved down to seventh in the lineup so the pressure was off. Ike Davis also hit his 14th homer of the year off Vicente Padilla on a ridiculous Bugs Bunny curveball he was throwing.

The Mets outfield defense was on tonight too. All three outfielders were making plays including Bay doing a faceplant into the wall in left while making a great catch.

July 22, 2010 Los Angeles, CA..New York Mets starting pitcher Hisanori Takahashi pitches in action during the Major League Baseball game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium July 22, 2010 in Los Angeles, California..The Dodgers defeat the Mets 2-0.Louis Lopez/CSM.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets lost their fourth straight game and it really should have been their seventh straight loss. Omar Minaya is with the team in LA now and told reporters before the game that Jerry Manuel’s job is safe. But not everyone’s job is safe on the Mets.

Hisanori Takahashi finally came back with a good start despite the loss going 7 innings and allowing only 2 runs. He allowed 1 run in the first inning and I was thinking “Here we go again”. But he recovered nicely and only allowed 3 hits and 2 walks in the game.

The Mets offense is the problem again. They only had 5 hits and 2 walks as a team. Surprisingly, Jeff Franoeur was the player of the game going 2 for 4. He was telling reporters before the game that he would welcome a trade for more playing time.

The misery continues for Mets fans as we watch our hopes of postseason play disappear before our eyes.
