John Maine didn’t have it tonight and the defense behind him didn’t help. The Mets played poorly in every facet of the game including the continuing saga of trying to find some offensive punch on a consistent basis.

Maine pitched only four innings giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks. He was in trouble from the first batter of the game when he walked Cardinals leadoff hitter Skip Schumaker.

Maine also had a throwing error on a pickoff play. Luis Castillo had a ball go right through the wickets and David Wright had a throwing error on a hit down the line that he never should have attempted to throw.

Endy Chavez was the only Met with multiple hits tonight. The only Mets run scored when Andy Phillips scored on a throwing error by Rick Ankiel over throwing third base and Kyle Lohse didn’t back up the play.

Oliver Perez was unstoppable today throwing seven innings and only giving up one solo homer to Wilson Betemit in the seventh. Perez only gave up three hits and no walks with eight strikeouts. His fastball was in the mid- 90’s and was consistently throwing strikes. Consistent is rarely used to describe Perez.

Perez made some changes both mechanical and strategic. He moved to the middle of the rubber, added some rock back to his motion, and threw a much higher percentage of fastballs.

Luis Castillo and Endy Chavez had three hits apiece in the game. Ryan Church went 2 for 4 in his return from the disabled list.

Santana Loses Again As Yankees Win 3-2

image Johan Santana takes another hard luck loss today. He has to be wondering why he came to this team that has no offense. The Mets attack consisted of two solo homers, one by Ramon Castro and the other by David Wright.

Santana ( 7-7) wasn’t terrible but wasn’t great either. He went six innings giving up three runs on four hits and four walks, but he did have eight strikeouts. His ERA increased to 3.03 for the season.

Jose Reyes demonstrated again that he has no concept of situational strategy. He was on second base with Damion Easley on first. David Wright was at the plate with two outs. Inexplicably, Reyes gets picked off second base by Andy Pettite leaning toward third base. There’s no reason for him to be going for third base with two outs and David Wright hitting with two runners on base. It makes no sense. This is a situation that needs to be addressed by Jerry Manuel. High school players know enough not to do that. Reyes can’t have the “green light” to run anytime. He clearly doesn’t understand the game well enough to have that responsibility.

Video Highlights

This is the second consecutive awful start for Pedro Martinez. He gave up six runs before being chased from the game after 5.2 innings. He gave up six hits and five walks in that span to allow the Yankees to put the game completely out of reach.

Sidney Ponson was on cruise control against the Mets offense. Apparently, the Mets didn’t keep anything for the second game of the double header after scoring 15 runs in the first game.

It was an ugly game but not completely unexpected. Most double headers are split anyway.

Delgado’s 2 HR, 9 RBI Caps 15-6 Win Over Yanks

There was too much offense by the Mets to even cover it all in this recap. Jerry Manuel has to be very happy with what he saw today. He’s been looking for more offense from the Mets, and now we’ll see if they can be consistent with it.

Carlos Delgado went crazy today offensively. He set a Mets team record with 9 RBI’s. He was 3 for 5 with a double, two homers, one of which was a grand slam and the other was a three run shot.

Luis Castillo went 2 for 3 with 3 walks and 2 stolen bases and 5 runs scored. David Wright was 4 for 5 with 3 RBI’s.

Mike Pelfrey, the Mets’ starter, was shaky today after his three previous starts were very good. Pelfrey consistently had men on base but I liked the way he never let the game get completely out of hand. That’s a good sign. He went five innings giving up four runs on eight hits and four walks.

Fernando Tatis played first base and had two incredible diving plays but was charged with throwing errors on both plays. One of the plays should have been an error charged to Pelfrey who didn’t catch the ball.

Wright’s 2 HR Leads Mets Over Mariners 8-2

David Wright appeared to make the most of his day off yesterday. He hit two home runs in his first two at-bats to put the game out of reach early. Jose Reyes chipped in with a three run homer of his own in the third inning. From there the Mets cruised to a win.

John Maine was solid but not spectacular tonight going six innings giving up two runs on five hits and two walks. He also had three strikeouts. The bullpen worked three clean innings giving up only one hit.

The Mets avoid a sweep at the hands of the lowly Mariners tonight before beginning a series with the Yankees on Friday.
