Mets Drop Second Game To Reds 7-1

As usual, the double header was split between the Mets and Reds today. That’s exactly the reason that the Mets tried to get the game in despite the rain last night. Double headers are almost always split.

The good news in this game is that Mike Pelfrey pitched really well and kept the Mets in the game through six innings giving up only two runs. That’s something for Pelfrey to build upon.

The bad news was that the Mets only got four hits in the game. Bronson Arroyo was on tonight even though he’s had a terrible season. He’s had a few starts that were fair this season, but this was by far his best game yet. There’s not much that you can do when a pitcher is on like that.

Duaner Sanchez and Billy Wagner didn’t have it tonight. Wagner was hurt by some poor fielding though.

The Mets absolutely must win the rubber game tomorrow. They cannot lose a home series to the Reds. That would be a terrible sign if they did.

Santana Wins As Mets Crush Reds 12-6

It wasn’t Johan Santana’s best performance but it’s typical for him this season. He can get into trouble, giving up 10 hits and a walk today, but he can work his way out. Santana got his fourth win of the season against an outmanned Cincinnati team.

There was a lot of offense on display for the Mets in the first game of today’s double header. Particulary, Carlos Delgado had three hits including a home run. He batted seventh in the order for the first time since 1995. Mets fans have been calling for him to be dropped in the order for weeks and Willie Randolph finally came to same conclusion. It seems like Willie is always the last one to figure these things out.

Brian Schneider also homered today. Surprisingly it was his first extra base hit of the season. I would guess that we’ll see Ramon Castro catching for the first time this season in the second game today.

Tonight’s Mets-Reds Game Postponed

They tried to get the game in tonight but there was too much rain. The original forecast was calling for the rain to end around game time but that didn’t happen.

The Mets and Reds will play a day-night dual admission double header tomorrow. The games will be at 1:10pm and 7:40pm. Johan Santana will keep the day game that he was originally scheduled for and Mike Pelfrey will pitch the night game.

Maine, Mets Clobber Dodgers 12-1

The story of the day was John Maine returning to his spring training form. He went 8.1 innings and carried a shutout into the ninth. That was the longest start by a Mets pitcher this season and a nice break for the bullpen with an off-day tomorrow.

Ryan church again was in the middle of the offense with another home run. Even Maine came through with a hit and two RBI’s. There was tons of offense by the Mets as you would guess by the final score. I don’t think it was coincidence that Carlos Delgado was out of the lineup and Marlon Anderson played first base. The lineup has a better flow when Delgado’s not in the middle.

The Mets come back to Shea on Friday night against the Reds after having a 3-3 road trip. If they can play .500 on the road that’s just fine, especially on the West coast.

Mets Drop Another To Dodgers 5-4

Nelson Figueroa pitched well enough to keep the Mets in the game although his line doesn’t show it. He was victimized by Ryan Church sitting on the ground while the winning run went around the bases for an inside the park home run and adding two more earned runs for Figueroa.

Blake DeWitt hit a ball off the top off the wall in right field. Church made a play on the ball but couldn’t come up with it. Mistakenly, Church sat on the ground while DeWitt rounded the bases. It turned out to be a huge blunder that cost the Mets the game. It’s the first time this season that I’ve seen Church make a big mistake so I won’t go crazy about it.

Moises Alou is a freak of nature. He keeps hitting going 2 for 5 last night. He took an extra base on Gold Glover Andruw Jones, and he stole home plate. The guy is 41 years old, coming off hernia surgery and an ankle injury. It’s incredible. The guy plays harder than anyone. I’m so happy that he’s on the Mets even though he’s frequently injured. When he’s in the game he’s making an impact.

The Mets need to take the third game to avoid a sweep and a losing road trip.

Mets, Perez Ripped By Dodgers 5-1

Rafael Furcal led off the game with a homer against Oliver Perez, and that was a sign of things to come. Perez went on to give up homers to Matt Kemp and Blake DeWitt as well.

The good thing about the game is that Perez was able to get through six innings. It may have only been because Willie Randolph left him out to dry no matter how bad the game got.

Now the Mets need to take both remaining games from the Dodgers to win the series.
