Carlos Delgado Suffers Rehab Setback

All of the Mets beat reporters are writing that injured Mets first baseman Carlos Delgado suffered a strained oblique muscle while rehabbing in Florida from hip surgery. He won’t be able to perform any baseball activity for a couple of weeks.

This isn’t that big of a deal. The Mets have been without Delgado for most of the season and he won’t be here next season anyway. This is the last year of his contract and at 37 years old, the Mets really have no use for his services anymore.

Whether he can play again this season or not doesn’t make a difference to the Mets. But I’m sure that he’d like to show that he’s healthy enough to get a meager incentive-laden contract from someone in the offseason.

Mets In The News Aug. 9, 2009

The Mets are playing to avoid a sweep in San Diego this afternoon and the piling on continues. Kevin Kernan of the New York Post writes that the team should fire GM Omar Minaya and hire Billy Beane. Beane was the Mets first round draft choice in the 1980 draft and played 13 games in the outfield for the Mets in 1984-1985. I find it extremely difficult to believe that the Wilpons would fire Minaya and keep him on the payroll for three more years. He just signed an extension before this season. I don’t see it happening for financial reasons more than anything.

The New York Post Mets Blog notes that Billy Wagner threw another scoreless inning during a rehab game in Florida yesterday. The target date for him to come back to the Mets is Aug. 21. Wagner is scheduled to pitch back to back games for the first time on Monday and Tuesday. I have a hard time seeing Wagner pitching anything but the ninth inning. The Mets don’t want him back. They’ve already told him that they’re not picking up his contract option for 2010. Let him pitch a game or two in the bigs and then see if he has any trade value before the Aug. 31 waiver deadline.

Mets DFA Berroa; Add Hernandez

As expected, the Mets designated Angel Berroa for assignment as Anderson Hernandez made his way to San Diego. At this point Berroa just isn’t a Major League player. I know that he was the 2003 AL Rookie of the Year. But something must have happened to him along the way because I just don’t see the talent there.

In 14 games with the Mets he hitting .148 with 1 double, 2 RBI’s, and 3 BB’s. He also had 2 errors in 8 games that he played at shortstop.

This move makes room on the roster for Hernandez. Expect him to take over second base until Luis Castillo‘s ankle is healed from his fall down the dugout steps. We may even see him play some shortstop when Castillo gets back.

Mets Trade For Anderson Hernandez

The Mets did another deal with the struggling Washington Nationals today re-acquiring light-hitting infielder Anderson Hernandez. You probably recall that the Mets sent Hernandez to the Nationals about one year ago to complete the deal for Luis Ayala.

This season with the Nats he’s hitting .251| .310| .320 with 9 doubles, 1 homer and 23 RBI’s in 77 games.

The Mets sent Single-A second baseman Greg Veloz to the Nationals in return.

Clearly, this is a move intended as insurance for Luis Castillo‘s injury. This doesn’t bolster the team for a playoff run. Far from it. Hernandez is a live body that can play second base and that’s all.

Mets Jose Reyes Injury Update

All of the Mets beat writers are reporting that Jose Reyes had another MRI today in New York that revealed significant scar tissue and inflammation behind his right knee. He left Port St. Lucie, where he was rehabbing, because of pain in his leg. The plan is for him to stay in New York for physical therapy to break up the scar tissue and reduce the inflammation.

I’m starting to doubt that we’ll see Reyes back on the field again this year. I’m sure that he’d like to be able to finish the season with the team so he can go into next year without such a bad taste in his mouth. Reyes hasn’t played since May 20 and only played in 36 games this season.

Mets Lose Jon Niese For 2009 Season

Jon_NieseReports are coming out tonight that Jon Niese is gone for the season after leaving the game in the second inning today. His right hamstring tendon is completely torn from the bone, an ugly injury. All of us that saw the game today knew it was serious when he collapsed on the mound and couldn’t walk off the field.

He’ll have surgery and is expected to recover in time for 2010 spring training. What a shame for the 22 year-old who really seemed to have found himself since struggling early this season.

Jerry Manuel told the media in his post game press conference that the Mets are considering starting Bobby Parnell in Niese’s spot. That could get interesting considering how badly Parnell has struggled for much of this season.

The Daily News is reporting that Jose Reyes is still having pain in his right leg while rehabbing in Port St. Lucie. He flew back to New York to be examined, again, by Mets team doctors.

I know that some have advocated for the injured Mets players to just shut it down for the season. And I recognize that there isn’t any point in coming back to make a playoff push for this season. That ship has sailed.

I would like to point out that if the injured Mets are ready to play that it would put a much better product on the field. Although the purpose of playing the season is to win, the Mets are also a business. Putting fannies in the seats and viewers on TV comes a close second to winning championships for the team. If the Mets can get Carlos Delgado, Carlos Beltran, and Reyes back on the field in September they should do it. At least give us a quality product to watch, even if the season is a goner.
