Mets C Schneider Return From DL Delayed

Brian Schneider is eligible to come off the disabled list on Sunday in Philadelphia. He’s been on the 15-day DL because of a muscle strain in his back. Apparently, he’s now having a calf problem that will keep him on the DL a little longer.

This isn’t a big problem for the team. Schneider has been an automatic out this season, hitting only .143. Combined with his lack of power and average defense, the Mets aren’t really missing him.

For now, Ramon Castro and Omir Santos will continue catching. It’ll be interesting to see if Santos continues to get the bulk of the playing time in Schneider’s absence.

Mets 1B Carlos Delgado To Visit Doctor

Carlos Delgado will be examined by a doctor today to evaluate his sore hip. He first felt the injury on Sunday when he hit a triple and slid into third base. Delgado didn’t play against the Florida Marlins last night but doesn’t expect the injury to be anything major.

More information as it comes in this afternoon.

Mets Pelfrey May Have Tendenitis

Mike PelfreyStarting pitcher Mike Pelfrey reported to the team that he is experiencing some soreness in his forearm. It’s been diagnosed as tendinitis and may impact Pelfrey’s ability to make his next start on Sunday.

The good news is that this may explain Pelfrey’s two sub-par starts that he’s made so far this season. The bad news is that the Mets are counting on Pelfrey to put up some big numbers as their #2 starter this season.

From NY Post:

“Every year I get some kind of tendinitis two or three times, but never in the forearm,” Pelfrey said yesterday before the Mets faced the Padres at Citi Field. “I don’t think it’s to the point where I can’t get guys out.”

I think that we all have a tendency to blow these things out of proportion, including me. But tendinitis is very common and is easily treated. It can become a serious problem if it doesn’t heal properly though.

Mets P Tim Redding Injured

Tim Redding’s spring training hasn’t started very well. He’s been shelled pretty much every time out so far. And now we have word from Mets GM Omar Minaya that Redding is suffering from “weakness” in his right shoulder. Now some would say that his right arm has always been pretty weak but this time its an actual injury.

Redding will be on the disabled list when opening day rolls around on April 6 and he won’t pitch anymore this spring. Normally, this wouldn’t be very significant for the Mets. But the fifth starter situation has become so dubious over the past three weeks that this does now impact the team.

Remember that the Mets won’t need a fifth starter for the first two or three weeks of the season anyway. So there isn’t an immediate need to sort out the situation. And we also have to remember that we are talking about the fifth starter. We’ve seen some awful pitching from Redding, Freddy Garcia, and decent work from Livan Hernandez this spring.

There are still some alternate options like Brian Stokes and Nelson Figueroa when he gets back from the Puerto Rican team in the World Baseball Classic. So I’m not that worried about this issue now, and I’m certainly not advocating signing Pedro Martinez. I saw enough of him the last three years to know that he just doesn’t have it anymore.

Mets Pagan Opts For Surgery

Angel Pagan will be out until sometime in May. He decided yesterday to have arthriscopic surgery on a bone spur in his elbow. It’s a solid decision, if he decided to rehab and it didn’t get better he could miss the entire season.

Pagan only has 2.144 years of MLB service time going into this season. So the Mets could send him to Triple-A Buffalo when he recovers from surgery, that’s the gamble that he’s taking. If he rehabs the elbow and it responds quickly, he could be on the major league roster next month.

I assume that Bobby Kielty will make the major league team, in the roster spot that Pagan would’ve had. If Kielty makes in impact, Pagan could be buried in the minors all year.

We’ll see how this plays out.

Angel Pagan Considering Surgery

The bone spur in Angel Pagan’s elbow may require surgery. But that surgery wouldn’t cause Pagan to miss the entire season. Great news for the Mets!

If Pagan does opt for surgery he’ll miss 6-8 weeks according to the NY Post.

I’d like to know what the other option(s) are for Pagan. I assume that he may miss less time if he opts to rehab the injury without surgery but runs the chance that rehab won’t cure the problem.

Mets Angel Pagan Hurt Again

A really sad story for a guy that I liked to have an impact on the Mets this season. Angel Pagan has been a really fast starter the last two seasons only to be injured along the way. We found out today that Pagan came back to New York for tests on his inflamed right elbow. The diagnosis is a bone spur that may require surgery.

Pagan was hitting .467 in 15 at-bats this spring and, in my mind, was a lock to make the team as corner outfielder that can switch hit. The Mets really need someone that can sub in defensively in left field for Daniel Murphy or Fernando Tatis. They also need a right-handed bat off the bench.

Last season Pagan got off the a hot start and got a ton of playing time because of Moises Alou’s injuries. He injured his shoulder in May in Los Angeles going for a fly ball over the wall.

Hopefully, Pagan won’t require surgery and will have a chance to do some damage for the Mets this season. I was really looking forward to seeing him play a key role off the bench. It looks like Bobby Kielty will fill the role of reserve outfielder and he’s also a switch hitter.
