Video: Billy Wagner Returns To Mets

If you were watching the Mets-Giants game last night you saw Billy Wagner back with the team in the dugout. He hasn’t pitched in a game since Aug. 2, 2008 when he had to have Tommy John surgery.

The plan is for Wagner to come off the disabled list on Friday and start throwing in games as an audition for a trade. Wagner has already told the Mets that he would waive his full no-trade clause to go to a contender.

Wagner also got feisty with a reporter while being questioned about the possibility of being traded.

Video: Mets David Wright Discusses Beaning

Mets Alex Cora To Have Season-Ending Surgery

With the Mets completely out of the playoff picture, Alex Cora decided to go ahead and have surgery to repair torn ligaments in his right thumb. He also has the same injury in his left thumb and will have surgery on that one in about five weeks. The Mets haven’t announced who will replace Cora on the roster yet.

There’s been a lot of speculation about whether Cora will be back with the Mets next season. He’s playing on a 1-year/$2 million contract this season. From all accounts, he’s brought some great leadership and professionalism to the team. The Mets players and front office really like him.

Although Cora really had to earn that $2 million because of all of the Mets injuries, I wouldn’t jump to conclusions that he’ll be back. Every team in MLB falls in love with their first guy off the bench, until the next offseason rolls around and that player wants more money or the team finds someone else that they like.

I just hope that Omar Minaya doesn’t get silly about offering Cora a multi-year contract like he did for Marlon Anderson.  I’m all for Cora getting another one year deal but let’s not go crazy and expect him to produce, or even play that much, for more than one season at a time.

Mets David Wright On Disabled List

The Mets finally got something right yesterday when they put third baseman David Wright on the disabled list with post concussion symptoms. As you know, he suffered a head injury in Saturday’s game after getting hit in the helmet by a Matt Cain pitch.

After a trip to the hospital, Wright was at home during yesterday’s game. It looks like they learned something after Ryan Church‘s concussion, then being flown around the country, then playing poorly for the rest of the season.

It’s possible that Wright could miss the rest of the season according to Jerry Manuel’s comments. Not that it matters anymore because the team is out of the playoff chase.

Infielder Andy Green will replace Wright on the Mets roster. He’s a 32 year old that was hitting .270 in 35 games for Triple-A Buffalo.

Basically, there’s no reason to go to Citi Field now unless Johan Santana is pitching. If you’re thinking about buying tickets for a game, don’t bother. The team that the Mets are fielding isn’t competitive anymore with the injuries that they’ve sustained this season.

If you need a Mets fix, stay home and watch them on TV. This team isn’t worth paying the price of a ticket for.

Mets News Aug. 15, 2009: Citi Field, Livan, Ricco, Beltran

In a lost season, the Mets can still get an occasional win as they did over the Giants last night. The bigger news may be that the team unveiled some long awaited changes to the stadium. We still don’t have a Mets Hall of Fame and Keith’s number 17 still isn’t retired. But they’re making some small steps in the right direction.

Mets Sheffield, Feliciano Waiver Claimed, Pulled Back

MLB Trade Rumors is reporting that the Mets put Gary Sheffield and Pedro Feliciano through waivers but both were claimed by team(s). Apparently, the Mets were unable to work out a suitable trade for the players and decided to pull them back. Both players will have to remain with the Mets for the rest of the season.

That’s bad news for Gary Sheffield that’s starting to see diminishing playing time as he doesn’t figure into the Mets plans for 2010. I’m sure that he would’ve loved to go to an American League team in the playoff race despite his comments about wanting to stay with the Mets.
