Jonathan Niese was optioned back to Triple-A Buffalo after a poor start against the Braves yesterday. Nelson Figueroa was recalled from Buffalo to take his place on the roster. Figueroa wasn’t on the Mets 40-man roster so they had to make a move to get Figueroa on the major league roster for the west coast road trip this week.

This spot in the rotation will come up again on Monday in Los Angeles. The reports from the minors are that Tim Redding is ready to join the Mets from the disabled list. So Figueroa might have another short stay in the majors.

Mets Delgado May Go On Disabled List

Carlos Delgado missed another game last night due to his sore hip. The team has been reporting that it’s an issue he’ll have to deal with all season. But now we’re hearing that if it isn’t better in a few days that he might need to go on the 15-day DL.

Although Delgado has been hitting very well since last June, this won’t be a devastating loss to the team even if he’s out for an extended period of time. Fernando Tatis and Jeremy Reed can hold down first base for a while without a problem. Sure, they’ll lose some power but I like the way Tatis and Reed have been playing so far this season.

I’ve never been a big fan of Delgado’s anyway. I’ve made no secret of that here. He’s a one trick pony with power but really no other game. He’s terrible with the glove and inconsistent as a hitter. He’s the Mets best option right now at first base but I don’t expect him to be with the team after this season.

Mets To Start Niese; Perez To DL

jon-nieseThe Mets finally found a way to get Oliver Perez off the 25-man roster. He had an MRI yesterday and was diagnosed with tendinitis in his right knee. Tendinitis can be varying in its severtity, so I wonder how bad it really is. But the Mets got their wish, Perez can go to the disabled list and then make some rehab starts in Florida to figure out his pitching problems.

Jonathan Niese is being called up from Triple-A Buffalo to start Friday night against the Pirates. Niese hasn’t been very good at Buffalo this season going 0-2 with a 6.55 ERA in 5 starts. I haven’t seen the big league potential in Niese that others have but I hope he can have more success against the resurgent Pirates than he’s had in the minors this season.

Report: Casey Fossum Signs With Yankees

It looks like Casey Fossum will be joining the New York Yankees on a minor league deal. He was designated for assignment, effectively cut, by the Mets after pitching against the Nationals on April 27, 2009. Ken Takahashi was called up by the Mets to replace Fossum on the major league roster. Takahashi has yet to appear in a game for the Mets.

The Times-Tribune of Scranton, PA reports that Fossum will start for the Yankees Triple-A Scranton team today. Thanks to MLB Trade Rumors for the link.

Mets C Schneider Return From DL Delayed

Brian Schneider is eligible to come off the disabled list on Sunday in Philadelphia. He’s been on the 15-day DL because of a muscle strain in his back. Apparently, he’s now having a calf problem that will keep him on the DL a little longer.

This isn’t a big problem for the team. Schneider has been an automatic out this season, hitting only .143. Combined with his lack of power and average defense, the Mets aren’t really missing him.

For now, Ramon Castro and Omir Santos will continue catching. It’ll be interesting to see if Santos continues to get the bulk of the playing time in Schneider’s absence.

Rumor: Mets Release Freddy Garcia

Original Post: There are rumors this morning that the Mets have released starting pitcher Freddy Garcia. I’ll try to confirm that during the day.

Garcia got rocked at Triple-A Buffalo last night and said that he was thinking about quitting the game but would sleep on the decision. He went 5 innings and gave up 8 runs raising his season ERA to 8.18. The word is that his fastball was barely hitting the mid-80’s during the game.

Garcia has been attempting to recover from shoulder problems for a few years now. He just doesn’t look like he’ll be able to re-gain his form.

Update: Confirmed. Multiple media sources are reporting that the Mets have indeed released Garcia after two minor league starts. Garcia also says that he won’t retire. His agent tells the media that the Mets made a mistake releasing him and that they shouldn’t have sent him to cold weather locations to pitch.

Carlos Delgado will be examined by a doctor today to evaluate his sore hip. He first felt the injury on Sunday when he hit a triple and slid into third base. Delgado didn’t play against the Florida Marlins last night but doesn’t expect the injury to be anything major.

More information as it comes in this afternoon.
